The best part of NADEFA Conference was gone

I go to NADEFA for a lot of reasons. It is a great place to promote your business, contribute to a worthy cause, make new friends and catch up with old friends. NADEFA was all that this year, but I feel a bit short changed on the last two things

Why I feel short changed is because the booth display room closed and was locked up for the evening at 5:00 each night. I understand that the Conference is about “Fund Raising” for NADeFA, but it was ALL about Fund Raising this year. At 5:00 each day we were essentially forced to leave our booth, go to dinner and then go to the benefit auction. The benefit auctions went on for hours and hours and I did not want to sit through all of it every night.

In the past, if you didn’t want to sit through the auction where you cannot even have a conversation with someone as it is so loud you could go back to your booth, make new friends, catch up with old friends and relax. This year if you didn’t want to sit through the auction you were in a sense essentially shown the door. Those that didn’t want to sit through the auction dispersed to local restaurants and bars in small groups rather than staying at the conference.

Don’t get me wrong, I Paid to go to the conference, paid for booth space, bought raffle tickets, bought donations, sponsored the new deer farmers seminar, stayed four nights in a hotel etc. I gave til it hurt this year to NADeFA. I support NADeFA. I do not support getting locked out of my booth and losing the opportunity to socialize all evening with fellow deer farmers. So, to me the best part of the NADeFA conference was not there and I was very disappointed. I feel short changed on my booth space and my NADeFA conference experience by about 14 hours (7 hours per night).

Just keeping it honest.

It sounds like they were trying to force you to be part of something and not considering what you wanted. Like you said: you gave until it hurt and yet they seem to want to manipulate the situation and squeeze a little more out of you.

It takes all the fun out the conference when they take away the time you intended to spend in the booth area meeting new friends and catching up with old friends.

Be careful who you elect to the board and the committees where decisions like this is made. Sometimes you will find someone looking to be elected or appointed that is on a power trip and couldn't care less what the membership wants or needs.

The confrence hall was closed in the evenings by the convention center not NADeFA.

We would never try and make you as a member be involved in something you did not want to participate in.I too missed visiting w/ everyone inj the conv. hall ,but the conv center was very secure in the sense that there were cameras and closed at 6.00.

As far as the food is was OK not a pasta person but I'm sure some people are.The rooms were fine I travel a lott and for the price they were fine.

The bottom line is you can't please everyone thats a given, and maybe I'm just the eternal optimist, but I thought the conf was great and I got to see some of my northern brothers that I only get to see once a year.Your feedback will be taken into consideration when a new venue is scheduled.

I was very disappointed in the hotel stay there food & the parking and some more things but I will stop at that.

Joe,

It was great to have a few minutes to chat last weekend. I really enjoyed talking with you and your wife.

Todd, I agree with everything you said. One of my favorite sayings the last few years has been... "I came for the party and a deer show broke out." This year there was very little of the party and mostly deer show. The social side of these events are enjoyable and frankly that is where most business deals are created and or finalized. I have many comments I plan to make in a formal letter to the board of my national org. (NADEFA)

Among the comments will be my thoughts on the convention center, the hotel, food, the way things are being handled and so on. Skip I also travel a lot. I average 17 days per month in hotels all over the world. That hotel was crap. Thank God the second room was better than the first. The second room only had one huge bug! My letter to the board won't be just complaints. I intend to offer ideas for improvements. I already have mentioned to a board member one idea that I will share here now.

I do agree security is important in the booth area. Also I see to SOME extent the idea of having folks in the benefit auction hall. However the social side can be addressed by having a hospitality room like years ago. We are bigger now so the room must be bigger also. But a room where we can bring in our own coolers and not pay $5-$10 per drink at a bar. And a place where we can play cards and talk without disruption from outsiders like drunken bachelorette parties and the like.

Anyway I think it is good for the paying members to voice their opinions to the board. And the board needs to listen and sincerely take those opinions into consideration. Hmmm, and there in lies another issue. The ability to listen to the membership and or differing opinions.

I know many big money donors are not pleased. It's time some things change before its too late.

I can't think of anything GOOD about an overpriced concrete jungle full horrible food and worse accommodations. It is a joke to take a bunch of country boys to the middle of cityville and force a wine and dine ATMOSPHERE on us, that most do NOT want!! If we (Nadefa) are so fat with cash I'd rather see our money doing something to help fight the bull#%it we face with other issues. Really........a pork chop and 6 uncooked beans. Nadefa, get off of your high horse and give us a real convention with an atmosphere we all enjoy. I was disgusted. OH YEA closing the exhibit hall was the icing on the cake, stupid!!!

I for one thought the exhibit room was big enough for the auction, back where the scoring was and that whole side. Another thing is you lost a whole day at the booths if you went to Kevins sale. I like this sale there but have it in the evening, NOT during the day. I know they broke up NADEFA's sale but the exhibits shut down pretty much during his sale. Then at tear down, what a mess. I hope next years a lot better.

I was very impressed with Rockstar Whitetails job of raising money for NADEFA and showing some outside the box marketing skills. The best I could figure, they raised $30,000 for NADEFA in about 10 minutes!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!

Actually Darren I am hearing lots of questions raised about what took place. Apparently in the past others wanted to do similar offerings and they were told no. That partial donation and the rest to the seller offerings weren't allowed. It was interesting to watch and it sure did raise some money though. I wonder who will raise the biggest son? My money is on Sipes or Flees.

Roger, good to hear from you. I dont understand your remark about -there are some questions about what took place. Is somebody jealous because they didnt think of it first? NADEFA has been struggling lately, I personaly thought what happened was a great fundraising effort , as far as people having sore asses over it--Who in thier right mind would have anything against raising 30,000 dollars for our national orginization? This benefits ALL of us. Roger, all good things must end. Darren

If Nadefa is struggling then they make worse decisions than I thought. I didn't realize they sold $300,000 in Gladiator XL semen. Quad offered 10% of the sales of semen after the first 2 straws?? that is $3,000. Rockstar was not the first one to come up with an idea like that, he was the first one to get the ok, good on him. But, we still deal with favorites and all the political favoritism by our parent organization.

I got a couple of calls last night asking me what I thought about how that was done. I was not aware that in the past some others wanted to sell an animal or whatever during the benefit auction and donate some of the money and keep the rest. The callers told me this was never allowed before and were wondering if there had been a change to policy. I didn't know about previous issues so this was new to me. So now you know why I said there are some questions as you asked me. There not my questions but someone else's. now about your remark, what do you mean "all good things come to an end"? What came to an end?

Jim , I was watching closely to see what the big announcment was from Rockstar ( I am sure everyone saw the emails saying that there was going to be something coming from Rockstar at NADEFA.) The first lot that sold was a complete donation, it was a straw of semen out of Gladiator XL and also included a sexed male straw out of him. It brought 9,000 -I believe all of that money went to NADEFA. Then when they sold the straws for the contest, 10 percent of each straw sold went to NADEFA. This is what I observerved, I could be wrong. Please correct me if I am wrong. Roger when I said all good things must end--I simply meant that I know that no deer farmer who is battling CWD or other issues that restrict thier normal business would have an issue with someone raising approx. 30x to help them fight thier fight. Who has the problem with Rockstar doing excactly that? It has to be someone who didnt think of it first. Persoanally, I contributed all I could this year again, and I thank anyone who raised money for ALL of us.

$24000 went to nadefa

I also spent $3200 on booth space

Also somehow I got to pay for 4 registrations, 1 for my wife for $950

Then on top of that I spent another $10000 in the benefit auctions

So just shy of $40000

Also $50000 will go to a farmer as soon as we have a winner.

Sorry that doesn't meet your expectations. Show me who is supporting farmers and NADEFA better.

Not to mention I have 10 deer out of TX yet I don't mind supporting the guys in the north.

How much money have you guys spent to support us in Texas?

Actually. I am the first one to come up it and put their own cash up. The other deal was unsuccessful because they tried to raise outside money for a contest that went on for too long.

I put cash money up and it ends with yearlings. It was also limited so it wasn't a free for all.

And your math skills are a little off.

Grab a calculator and type in $300000 x .10 and get back with us.

Bottom line, I lost half my herd this year to EHD, I can no longer take deer into LA., I cant bring deer in from PA, I absolutely love my Whitetails and have made a decent living doing what I love. How can I be anything but thankful to somene who raised 40k to benefit all of us? Match that donation and you might have an argument-otherwise what are you whining about? Roger that

I have been in this industry for 20 years plus. I have learned you cant make everyone happy---That is just the way it is.
