Hello,

I have a fawn that is about 5 weeks old. He's been getting kid replacer and has started grazing a little bit on grass. One day he was doing perfect, full of energy bucking around and the next day he would not nurse. He went all day without nursing yesterday, bythe end of the day he was slightly bloated. Today he is really bloated. He's been given 1 ml of pen g and 1 ml of cd toxoid. I have seen him drinking water from bucket several times....which is unusual for him to do. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Any way to help with the bloat? What causes this? Anything helps.

thanks

There have been many discussions/recomendations for bloated fawns that have taked place here on the forum. You should be able to do a search to get more info. Sorry, I am not much help but I can steer you to the words of the many vetereans in the field.

I agree, 1cc of antitoxin is definitely not enough. I would give atleast 5cc. If you have any probiotics it would help also. Probios, target or atleast duravet lamb and kid paste.

At that age, fawns are going through a change in their stomachs. It is normal at times for them to not have much of an appetite for a day or two.

It wouldn't hurt to also give him 1/2cc BOSE and 2cc Thiamine (which is straight B1). B1 is hard to find at times, so in a pinch you can give 2cc of B complex. This should help give him some energy.

Good Luck and God Bless!!

I guess I wasn't quick enough. He died today. =( It's so tough when they get down...it's hard to get them better.

Thanks everyone for your advice

We have had a tough time with bloat this year also and I am so sorry for your loss, it is never easy. If you check your bottle of antitoxin you will see that 5cc is a preventative dose and 10cc is a treatment dose. The high dose of Pen-G also works in tandem to take the bloat down. My deer, who looked like a keg on legs, was back to normal in one hour of administering these drugs at the above mentioned dosage.
