Ticks???????

Any time we are working any animals we will spray them with Del-Phos. Del-Phos is mixed with water and is very reasonable priced to use. It will kill ticks and lice and looks like it keeps the animals clean for a month. We spray all animals in September through November as we are working them. In our area that is when winter tick have hatched from the ground and are transfering to the animals.

We use ivermec injectable before spring... Than pour on After ...I have never found a tick on my deer.

Ivermec injectable will only kill external parasites which are at the stage of blood sucking their host. Spring is the correct time of year to give ivermec as that is the time the ticks are feeding on blood. Many of these external parasites live on the animal for some time only eating dander from the host. The best method is to use all the parasite products at the correct time to remove all the stages of the tick or lice on the animal.

We have Garlic added to our feed and have no trouble W/ ticks or horseflies.If you feed a pelitizied feed then you can go to Sam's Club and buy a 7 lb container for around $17.00 and add it yourself.They claim it works on midgeflies also. It really works.

Our local problem is with winter ticks which hatch in August and these nymphs crawl up in the grass and then up the legs of the elk and deer. They then develop into a tick by December at which time they cause the hair loss from the tissue damage and animals themselves rubbing and chewing the infected area. At this point Ivermec or Cydectin pour on or injectable will kill the ticks as they are sucking blood. But if you used Del-Phos in late August or September you have killed all the nymphs before they caused any blood loss or developed into the tick. Spraying with Del-Phos in late fall should stop all external parasites as it is made to kill lice and ticks.



Any time we bring in animals for whatever reason we will give injectable wormer to make sure we get the internal parasites. I use Cydectin at least two times a year as it will kill more parasites than Ivermec I have been told.



We irrigate our land which seems to cause more parasites so we will pour ivermec pour on or Valvazen or Cydectin on the food every six weeks to two months. We have checked stool samples for eggs and have determined we need to worm every two months all through May to September. We will rotate these products so the parasites will not become immune to the worming product. This is just what has worked for us.

We add about 7lb per ton which would be about 3oz per bag roughly. I know some add more than that but that amount seems to help on the flies. We have it added at the mill.

What we did was buy to guinea chickens and let them go in the deer pens. It might be hard to believe but they really work well. We've had the same pair for two years and we're getting some more this year for new pens. Had a big problem before the birds but in less than a week they had them cleaned up. They were $7 for the pair. Can't beat the price and it was once and done.

Thats a good idea i was going to do same thing but was told not to put them in my pens for fear they may cause cocsideosis.Don't no if thats true or not.Maybe somebody else may no.

Yeah Virgil I watched three of my best fawns die this year to coccidiosis and i won't take any chances....I'll use the garlic and I have a spray fogger that I will use.

I have to agree with Buckskin, 7lb per ton has been a good Fly / Tick repellent for us. It's very easy to use, and the price for the protection you get is not bad either. Good Luck.

I am using a pelleted feed that comes in a 50 lb. bag so what would be the best way to add the garlic, Would it stick to the pellet?

Viking, I drive a few extra miles to get my feed mixed in a tumbler. The pellet my feed mill sells comes in a 50 lb. bag. When they put the pellet and other ingredients in the tumbler I have them mix liquid molasses and soybean oil in a 8 to 1 ratio. That would be 1000 lbs. of feed mixture, 40 lbs. of liquid molasses, and 5 lbs. of soybean oil. You could put garlic (2 to 3 lbs.) per 1000 lbs. of feed into the tumbler during fly season. The garlic will cut down on stress and deer that are fed well without stress are healthy animals and do not have problems with ticks. The habitat in my back yard has been changed greatly in the last ten years for the better by having deer. The deer have turned brushy land into tillable soil which has benefitted them also. JOE

I am feeding my deer ADM's 18% complete deer and elk feed. I don't know if thats what you are using but you are saying I could take that feed somewhere and have them add liquid molasses and soybean oil and tumble it with the garlic so it sticks to the pellet. What is the soy bean oil part of this mix good for?

Hi Dave, I am not feeding ADM right now but will probably be feeding it in the future. I know I talked to someone who feeds ADM and they have ADM load the feed into a semi-truck and deliver it to them. They have had oil mixed to their feed but are not getting it in a 50 lb. bag. A few years back I had soybeans put in my feed ration and all it did was make my feed ration dusty along with the oats they added. If you only have a few deer and you get your feed ordered in 50 lbs. bags all you could do is mix the garlic with liquid molasses and soybean oil to bind it all together. It keeps the deer from sorting the feed and you won't have anything but an empty feeder when you go to feed them every day. It is not good to have dusty feed since it makes the deer sneeze a lot when they eat and then you have to clean out your feeder everytime you feed which is a hassle. I like the ADM feed since it takes care of all the varmints getting into it after you put it in the feeder. I like the condition and coats my deer have from eating feed that isn't so dry and I have absolutely no waste. If ADM can't mix your feed since you have a low quantity you should be able to buy liquid molasses and soybean oil at the feed mill and do it yourself 50 lbs. at a time. When I deworm my deer with Valbazen it also makes a difference which wasn't the case with a dry feed ration. The garlic might be a little harder to find in bulk but some feed mills have it also. JOE

Has anyone noticed a change in the amount of feed they consume after adding the garlic?

Thanks again Joe, I am going to try to mix it up one bag at a time myself. I heard someone say you can pick up the garlic at Sam's club in bulk. What do you figure would be the amount I would mix for only 1 bag (50 Lbs.).

If you need alot of garlic bulk,you can get it from John White Co. in Birmingham,AL in 50 lb sacks.Their number is 205-595-8381.We had it added to Maxrax last year and it worked great.I believe the deer ate more with garlic added,they love it!
