Ticks???????

Dave, I would take a round 55 gallon plastic drum that is clean. Put 2-50 lb. bags of ADM feed in with the following: 4 lbs. of liquid molasses- 1/2 lb. of soybean oil- 1/5 lb. of garlic. When they get used to the garlic in the feed you could probably give them 1/4 lb. of garlic per 100 lbs. of feed when you get closer to fly season like June 1st. The molasses and soybean oil will bind the garlic to the feed and they will get the full dosage of garlic that way. They will also have nice shiny coats and will find the feed more palatable. With hot dry weather the feed you put out in the morning will become very dry by late in the day. The molasses and soybean oil will stop this from happening so much. Anything that you can do to get these animals in tip-top condition by Oct. 20th will pay dividends to your overall herd health the next coming year. Stop over late this summer like early September and I will show you what I mean. JOE

Great, Thanks for all the help Joe. I will have to stop up there and check out your farm later this summer. I think you are less than a hour and a half from here so that would be a nice Sunday drive. I am busy this spring with putting up another pen and getting ready for some more fawns :).

Take Care...Dave

Thanks Dave, I just got in from tilling and I can barely type now (tendonitis). Speaking of fawns, I noticed one kicking in my oldest doe this morning. She was bred on Nov. 6th according to my records. I will be in southern MN this summer and I will call ahead before stopping by. Have a good fawning season. JOE

One of the latest weapons in the fight against insects is the mosquito fogging systems that are becoming very popular here in the south. Originally designed to rid your yard and play-space of mosquitos, these systems have been adapted to deer pens by some ingenious and forward thinking deer-farmers, with tremendous success. The systems are constructed with a tank that holds water and permectin solution. The solution is distributed around a perimiter by a small plastic tubing with spray nozzles mounted on the fences. The solution is atomized and sprayed on a timed basis and it eliminates all bugs in the protected areas, even midge flies.

might try a couple of guineas. My two have cleaned out the ticks and lots of other unwanted pests. Good on wasps too.

I have a "house" for them separate from the deer yard. I open gate from guinea pen to deer pen and let them work there during day.

Has worked great so far.

Do you use Galic power or Galic salt? I never tried this but would like too--I hate those big flies that draw blood. I do use fly preterates in my pens that seems to help keep the flies down but of course not all of them. I haven't found any ticks so far on any of my tame deer. But if there is a way to provent it I would give anything a try.

some of the best prevention i have saw is spread the granules for ticks in pen, in spring, wont see none for 2or 3 yrs only my experience, Dc

Barr"s WCT, We use granular garlic. We get ours at Sam's club for About17.00 for 7lbs. We have used a garlic lick that contained salt but they only used it occasionally. The granular in the feed is by far the best. Rick
