Question:

I've spoken to my attending vet regarding this antagonist.....he's saying to give

1/2 the amount SQ and the other 1/2 SLOW IV. I've never placed an IV before. Would it be safe to give the entire dose SQ? Thought I'd ask you guys because your the ones with all the hands on experience. Also, if I'm using just Xylazine for ear tagging....would you leave them down for a bit before giving the reversal or do you guys give it right after your done with them?

I'm only using the Xylazine because my herd is fairly tame. The vet came out last summer and took care of a prolapsed uterus with just Xylazine. So I figure that's much more invasive than a couple ear tags.

Deer Dee, We reverse as soon as we are done working on the animal.........Period!

We allso give our reverser in the white rump of the animal and always draw the syrenge plunger back to make sure we have it in the muscle and not a vien. I know alot of folks do it different and that is fiine!

BUT THIS IS HOW WE DO IT AND IT WORKS ..........FOR US................ON OUR FARM........So I'm only answering your ? with what works for ME......ON MY FARM!!!

Good Luck!

In The Muscle so it can act faster, we also use Telezol regardless of the attitude of the animal

I agree with Wayne word for word. The only thing I would add as advice would be to not use straight Rompum. There will be a day...a time...when you wished you would have used the mix. Actually, there will be DAYS...and TIMES...when you wished you would have used the mix.

Best of luck to you Deer Dee!

Wayne are you trying to say thats what works for you, on your farm, with your animals In your part of the world when the pressure of the earth is at special point and the axis tilt is at its highest.. Its a shame you have to give an answer like that but i do know why you did it!!!!!!

OK I can't stand it anymore. I have anesthesized over 3500 various cervids with all the drugs known to man. It is MY advise that you always use telazol with the Xylazine. Reversal can go in as soon or as long after as you prefer, but NEVER give an antagonist SQ. I could give you all my reasons, but I can't type that much!

I also give mine in the muscle just like Wayne says to do it. You will find some deer need telazol but not all need it. As you get to know your herd keep records of who needs it and who doesn't. There are going to be times when you are going to wish you used telazol as Mark said also.

Deer Dee, I agree with EVERYONE elses post............USE THE COCKTAIL....They can die easily enough and the risk to reward is to great not to use a cocktail mix! You are getting a ton of information from farmers who have more hands on experience with deer than almost any vet that you will find! This is one medicine that SUB Q is NOT ADVISED

If I was doing ANYTHING ELSE...I'd use the mix. But you guys are all right....I've seen it happen with just the Rompun....not good. I should probably just pay the extra money and do it well.....no stress on the deer. I thought it was odd that the vet said SQ. I'll definitely do IM!!! I appreciate you guys answering me on this seeing as how this is a touchy subject to post comments to:)

With the mix, would you guys do 5 or 6 mg Xylazine to 1 bottle of freeze-dried Telazol? ....then 1 mg per 100# IM?

Are there any negative effects you guys have experienced with this mix and what are the symptoms?

After giving the reversal, how long before they'll try to stand? While down....would you guys try to position them sternally or just leave them on their side as long as I'll be done in less than 10 minutes? And would you give them anything such as a B-12 Complex or Probiotics to come out of the sedation easier?

Sorry so many questions......you guys are the pros though:) If you want.....message me.

We mix ours 6 to 1 and use a 2cc dart 3/4" needle on does and 1" needle on bucks. We typicaly try to get a kneck shot on both bucks and does. We also give 6 cc Vitamin B-12 I/M in the rump at time of reversel and give 2 1/2 cc reverser and 6 cc Ivormectin Plus wormer to adult deer

I'll also say this has worked for ME and if you do it differently that is fine..........I'll still do it my way! LOL

Sorry my measurements were not typed in correctly. I meant 5:1 or 6:1 ratio to one bottle of Telazol. The Zylazine is a 100 mg/ml concentration when you get it. Do you really only get @ 2.6 ml out of the mixed bottle?

I'm liking BAM more and more especially with continued price dropping. The "A" is azaperone which is the only treatment known for capture myopthy. The B(butorphanol) is very safe and reversed with naltrexone and the M(medetomidine) is a newer generation of rompun(xylazine) and reversed with atepamizole and tolazoline. Once anesthesia is reversed(avg 2 min recovery time), the deer is left with azaperone, which is awesome!! All the above meds re included in the BAM kit As for reversals- all IN MUSCLE. I only go iv in emergencies... God bless and good luck
