Hi I'm new to deer farming and the forums. I am in ky and just finished building my first pen. I have 2 does I am wanting to get as soon as I can. With the hot days we are having I am trying to figure out how I can transport them. I have a 5 hour drive with them. I was wondering what your all suggestions was. I am lookin around for someone with ac trailer. What is to hot of a temp to haul in. Thought maybe I can find a mild night and just do it at night. What is your oppinion?

We have hauled dozens of deer into warm climates and have only used our non-A/C trailer. The key is to get them loaded without stress and moving them at night. If you move them in the daytime when it's hot and you have a breakdown or get into a traffic backup, you will probably have dead deer.

Hauling in the heat of the day is not a possibility. Night time may work, but find out what the humidity is gonna be. I'm going to think, humidity in the trailer will kill them as fast as heat will. I've hauled shooters with a guy and when opening up the trailer the humidity sticks to you although it's 40 or so degrees outside temp. Trailer gets hot quick. That same day we hauled 8 bucks and I'll bet the temp inside the trailer on that 40 degree day was over 70. All vents in the trailer where open... good luck with what u decide... me personally, wait!!!

A trailer with AC can be good for keeping humidity in check, however hauling them with the trailer too cold compared to the outside temp they were in and are going into is not good either. It is exciting to get your first deer, however it might be wise to wait until fall.

Janderson,

what states are you transporting in? Might be a good idea to check the local weather where the deer are, and where they are going. Might be a cool day or 2 that gives u the opportunity to move them..

Move them at night. Buy about 20 bags of ice and put in the trailer with them. I agree with Roger that waiting till fall is your best option.

if you knock them out use bam because it does not raise their body temp.  they are out quick and up quick.

That Murphy is a real SOB. Shows up any time he pleases!

Your right I'm excited to see some deer in my pen. I am just hoping to find a cool night. Probably won't be one of those for a while. So it may be fall before I get them.

We hauled 5 loads last year approx 5 hours each way over 4th of July. Several velvet bucks , 14 adult does with fawns , we loaded at 11 pm each night at 75-80 degrees F . Keep the air flow up and live load if you can in the dark. We lost 1 fawn that I think may have been stepped on. Avoid traffic . It wasn't our first choice but the deer had to be moved that week.
