One of my very favorite does, Lucy is extremely sick after giving birth. Randy said she looked sick the day before she had the fawns and the day she had the fawns, I could see she wasn't caring for them and took them to bottle feed right away. They are doing very good....but Lucy is not. She did clean out as Randy saw the afterbirth. She did not eat it though. I gave her some LA 300 today and just would like some opinions on what else to do. She is very listless and I can tell she just isn't feeling well. Please....help me save Lucy if you have any ideas. I am very scared for her right now.

Susan we had a girl do the same thing after she gave birth. She is the only deer i have ever seen not take care of the afterbirth. She had alot of discharge for a couple days after. I loaded her up with with antibiotics also and hit her hard with probotics and she is comin back around. She was droppin weight and just layin around for about a week or so before she started gettin back to herself. Good Luck with her!!!

If she is tame enough to handle, check her eyelids and ensure they are pink and she is not anemic. We have seen several cases of (verminous) pneumonia due to anemia from worm overload post fawning. If the worm load is very high, the deer's blood becomes anemic and cannot exchange O2 in the lungs efficently enough to prevent fluid from building . Treatment is immediate worming after fawning and injections of NuFlor, poly serem and pig iron. Fast reaction to this ailment is essential to save the animal.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the quick responses. Scott....I looked at that bottle of wormer today and thought I should give her some. She is extremely tame. I will take a look at the eyelids tomorrow. What is pig iron Scott...never heard of it.

Thanks again....she is a very special doe very dear to my heart. Everyone has a few of those in their herd.

Will she let you feel her bag? Could she have mastitis? Hope Lucy is feeling better. You are right we all have our special girls.

Susan - My only advice is to be very aggressive in pursuing this and the treatment thereof. In years past, I've had 3 or 4 does, all extremely healthy leading up to the day of birthing, then immediately after giving birth, took and got gravely sick...and within 36 hours of giving birth were dead.

My vet had a name for what possibly might have killed them, but I can't remember it. I know I haven't helped here much, but just wanted to warn you that if it's what my deer had, you haven't much time to act.

Hope the very best for your 'dear' deer and you! And yep...we all have them...''dear'' deer!
