Here's the background:

Last Saturday, I picked up a doe from a gentleman to live breed for him. She's a tame doe and he darted her with a .6 cc of 333mg mixed 4:1. He hit her in the flank and she didn't quite go down so he hit her again with .6cc. We administered 3 cc of Trangle 9 and 1cc of Dectomax and revived at 60 minutes. She was alert with head up before we drove off. I stopped 20 minutes down the road to check on her and she was still upright and normal. 3 Hrs later she came off the trailer fine and everything looked good. The next day I noticed she ran kind of funny. The next day my ranch foreman calls me and says she looks drunk. The next day he says she's laying flat on her left side she can get up but wabbles and immidiately falls flat down on her left side everytime. I had him move her into the barn and called the owner. He asked me to give her 1cc of Draxxin and just watch her, so I did, along with 2cc of B12. She's been in the barn since Tuesday and showed no signs of improvements. In fact she's almost in a paralyzed state. She can move her feet and neck, but always falls back to her left. She can't get on her feet and her left eyes kind of squinty and her right eye looks bugged out with some red pigmentation in the upper part of the white. I've had to set her in a sternal recumbancy position up against the wall on so she doesn't fall over. I've got food and water right of next to her, but I don't think she can really even get her mouth to them becaust it's like she can't move her neck to the right. Strangest thing I've seen, she has no signs of trauma, no mucos around the mouth or eyes. She appears to have some sort of Nerve damage or something becasue she's alert and knows I'm there, but can barely turn her neck to look up at me.

If anyone's seen or heard of anything like this, please post or PM. Thanks.

Give her 1ml of 1:1000 epinephrine per 100 pounds of body weight! The Triangle 9 states in case of anaphylactoid reacation administer epi! Don't wait do it ASAP. can be administered either subQ or IM

We had a fawn that we saw hit the fence one time. He hopped up and seemed fine. Then over the following day he slowly lost use of his back legs. Best we could tell ever increasing swelling from an injury put pressure on his spinal cord. Maybe some sort of shot (steroids?) to reduce some pressure would have helped.

Administering vaccines to a tranquilized deer is never recommended. It is much safer to administer the vaccines after the deer has recovered from the anesthesia. If she was tame a blow gun injection after she recovered from the anesthetic, would heve been a better course.

Below is the precaution I found on the Dectomax website.........Maybe Ivermectin would have been a safer product to use for the treatment and control of internal and external parasites

Caution: DECTOMAX injectable solution has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species because severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs, may result.

years ago I had a doe do a very similar thing, It was about the same time of year and we sorting for breeding season, we ran them through a shoot and gave them shots and one included Ivermectin Plus, after a few days the deer could not get up and just layed there and spun in a circle. what we later found is that a worm from (i forget what it was called) some kind of fly was migrating through the spine and we dewormed her at the wrong time and killed it when it was in the spine, bad luck I guess. I'm not sure if that is what happend to yours but it sounds very similar.

Scott,

I've never had any reaction to the Dectomax, which I've used for a couple of years now. Do you think this could have been caused from Acidoses, which lead to White muscle disease? This could put her into a paralytic state where she can barely move.

Steve - where on the body were all of the injections given? Is it possible that a misplaced needle did some nerve damage? Or, because of the flank shot with the first dart, what about peritonitis or other abdominal damage? Or, because she was given a second full dose (.6 cc's 2 times) how much reversal was she given? You have to reverse the amount of xlyazene actually given, so extra in this case.

Otherwise, because of the seeming nerve related symptoms, I agree with the suggestion to give Dex.

How is your doe? I've been reading this situation since you posted and just had a hunch! See what you think.

This sounds like listeriosis that I've experienced.

It can be brought on by any kind of stress such as changing feed, parasitism, dramatic weather changes and advanced stages of pregnancy (moving, darting) Symptoms can include depression, decreased appetite, fever, leaning or stumbling or moving in one direction only, head pulled to flank with rigid neck, facial paralysis on one side, slack jaw, and drooling, abortions.

The treatment I used was Penicillin, Dextrose mixed with water, and 500mg Thiamine, plus calf pac probiotics. Polyserum will help too, while the immune system is compromised.

Donna,

She has some of those symptoms, but certainly not all of them. She's been basically paralyed for the last week. She's obviously able to get her head down to the water because she's still alive and alert.

Robbie,

That was our initial thought as well. It could very well be nerve damage, but how long does that continue. I didn't admisniter the shots, but I know they were given Sub Q.

Right now, we are treating for white muscle disease with 4cc of Dextamethozone everyday and 1cc of potassium and 4cc of BOSe every 48hrs. This was the Vets reccomendation.
