OK DC....20 years ago this fall...day after shotgun season. I had my bow tag left to fill. There was a decent buck just standing in the middle of some grass and we could walk up to it. It took off and eventually started running in circles between the 2 of us. Every time it ran by me, I shot. After I had hit it several times, it was moving somewhat slow, like a fast walk, and the guy that was with me ran up and grabbed it by the antlers:eek:....it was headed for some posted land. He needed help to hold it so I grabbed the other antler. All that I had was my knife and I soon learned that stabbing a buck in the ribs was not a smart thing to do. After it threw us to the ground, we regrouped and I went for the throat. Game over! So what was the dumbest thing .... grabbing a buck by the antlers, stabbing it in the ribs, or leaving my 3 year old son alone in the car for 45 minutes?? My son is now 23 and a pretty darn good hunter if I must say!!:D

DC here my latest, might not be my greatest,....

I moved our AI does into the pasture with the back-up buck , the does were just milling around grazing with me trying to encourage them to go through the 14 foot gate, I though it was safe... there just does....my back was to the buck pen , I was about 1 1/2 feet from the wire and the buck from my avatar hit the fence at full speed and moved it at least three feet, a pair of insulated carharts prevented major injury, it just added to my education and I'm walking a little slow today.. well OK a lot. Never heard him coming but the round purple bruises on the back of my left thigh will keep reminding me for a couple weeks,

update:still real sore similar to shredding a hamstring playing football, feels like some one played peek-a-boo with my pelvis by moving my thigh and butt muscles with a fence stretcher

thank you God for modern painkiller drugs.

I was putting fresh straw in the buck fawn shelters last week. I dropped some hay by the main gate to keep them buisy while i was at the other end of the pen putting down the straw. I herd something and looked up in time to see the buisness end of a buck fawn running at me at full speed. He hit me in my gutts and pined me in the back of the shelter. Nocked the wind out of me and gave me two little markes from his buttons. He just ran off and jumped around like a bronco for a little while. I'm pretty sure he was just having some fun at me expense. I weigh in at 190Lbs so i was kinda impressed by him nocking me back about 8 feet. Not such a good idea to be 100 feet away from the gate in a buck fawn pen. I guess they aren't as harmless as i thought.

I had an interesting expierence this past fall while moving me and my dad were moving a buck on a strecher. I had darted the deer, gave him 20 minutes and went down to get him, he wasnt completely out but he was dizzy enough that i got up close to him enough to stick him in the neck with a little ketamine. Well after 5 minutes he was down and snoring. So we loaded him on the strecher and started carrying him up the hill to the other pen, Well this guy was a little to much for me and dad, he was so heavy and we were carrying him uphill. while we struggled the ketamine had run its 20 minute course and the buck started twitching a little, I thought uh-oh i dad, I forgot to tie his legs up ( I left the rope down in the other pen), we got to hurry. Well we were only 15 feet away, the buck jumped up, rolled off the stretcher and just about took mey legs out from under me, never seen one wake so fast, but man was he mad. Luckily he was in a pen when he woke up, even though it was the wrong pen. It was poor planning on my part, but at least nobody got hurt, I dont think i'll be forgetting to tie the legs up anytime soon.

My dumbest stunt so far was hunting. I was not expecting to see a shooter that evening, I was planning to shoot a doe for meat. So I took a 22 magnum rifle with me. The largest buck I have ever shot was the first deer in the field that evening. Since I had a small caliber rifle I decided a head shot would be best, so I shot him between the eyes. He hit the ground like a sack of potatoes. I walk up to him and admired my trophy. Since he was rather large I walked up the hill and got my truck. I was backing up to him when I saw him raise his head. Before I could get out of the truck he jumped up and ran off. I never found a drop of blood not even where he was laying. All I can figure is I just knocked him out. It was a very wierd feeling to watch my trophy trot off.

Now that all funny dont care who you are!!!! Might be long winter HEY MITCH!!c,mon just one!! I know you got few stories:DThis could cause stroke :D it hurts! Dc

DC is right,Mitch....a good Polish story would be good to hear!!:D But don't you dare give DC a stroke!!!

That's classic :D

got a question Deerchaser( now we know how you got your name) Was your tag on the deer when it ran away?

Well DC and Ike here it goes !!! Lets go back about 20 years for this tail. Maybe a few of you have seen the story from Alberta that the hurnter lost his rile on a set of antlers? Well with me it was oh so close to having the same thing happen but the only thing I lost was my tag !!! LOL  I had just shot a nice 5x5 and walked up to it to tag it and dress it. I was admiring my trophy as I filled out my tag. As I walked up and tied my tag around the horns lo and behold the ole boy jumps up and runs down the hill into a bunch of other hunters !!! :( BANG !!!!! They started yelling, I got him I got him !!! As I watched from above they walked up to the buck and the one man said this buck has a tag on him. Still laughing from the whole thing I yelled down and said, yeah that`s my buck see my tag ???? :D We all sat there and had quite a few laughs over that !!! After checking the deer over the guy knew the first shot was the killing shot. The buck was just running dead !!! They laughed and told me that my tag was on it so that was hard to deny who`s deer it really was !!! :D I felt that I wanted to keep that paper tag as a reminder but the DNR thought otherwise !!! So now ya know how a ******* tags his deer !!! Tip of the day !!! :) Check your deer before you tag !!!! :D :D

This is a true story ,and I hope I can do it justice. About ten years age , my oldest son Nick was headed trout fishing,on a secondary road, when he spotted a doe in the side ditch. She had been hit by a car but was barely still alive. Nick stopped his truck and approached the deer. She could lift her head a little but was about done for. The only external injury that he could notice was a compound fracture of the left rear leg, at the knee joint. Being the ole softie that Nick is he knew he had to do something. So he headed to his truck for some supplies. The only thing he could find was a roll of RED Duct Tape.He was sure she wouldn't make it , but he knew he had to try. My young son found two good stiff sticks along the bank and commenced setting and splinting his first deer leg. The ole girl was about done for so there wasn't much of a struggle. Due to the severity of the break he had to tape and splint about two foot of hind leg. Nick made her as comfortable as he could and went on his way. He did not come home the same route so he wasn't sure how the doe made out. The next day about 2:00 in the afternoon, my other son Nathan was going up the same road. Not knowing about his brothers emergency vet work. When he rounded a turn he saw something RED but wasn't sure what it was. When Nathan got closer he said it was the Craziest thing he had ever seen. There in the ditch was a doe that had been dead for a day in full BLOAT with a Red splinted rear leg sticking straight in the air. Who in the world would have done that. When he got home and told the story, all Nick said was Dang I hoped she might make it. I hope you all can get a good picture in your mind what a fully Bloated deer looks like with a bright RED duct tape splinted leg sticking straight in the air. Have a good one, Allen

Mitch...maybe you should hunt in Alabama.....problem solved!!:D But hey, they couldn't say you didn't shoot it first.

That`s right Ike !!! If I shoot a deer with a tag on it`s horns it`s yours !!!! Even if it doesn`t have a hole in it !!! If your good enough to tag a live deer your welcome to it !!! LMAO I heard that`s how DC hunts !!! Jumps out of a tree stand and tags before he hits the ground !!! Saves on shells that way !!!

Yep!and Arrows, I Thiink the polish call it fair Chase!! and few okies. Good Idea to Carry roll red tape for accidents:D

I once strattled a tranquilized red deer bull. NEVER AGAIN. I didn't make the full 8 seconds, but the ride was exciting.

:DGreat stories guys! I guess I'll play.....

Two years ago very late in the deer season about mid February, I was sitting in my house one morning watching TV. I looked out the window and noticed a big doe and a fawn were down at the feeder. I still needed to take out a few doe for the year, so I figured I would do a little stalk hunting to start my day. So i snuck around the side of my house and closed a little ground on them using a big Oak tree to block their view. I finally got to within about 200 yrds and laid the rifle against a tree limb for a rest. I put the cross hairs on her and squeezed the trigger. BOOOM! I knew I had made a good shot as I watched her hunch up and run into the woods with the fawn trailing behind. I slowly made my way down there and found good blood and tracked her into the woods a little ways and sure enough their she was! As I was walking up to her I remember thinking "wow, that's a big bodied doe!" and as I got even closer I noticed she had a prior leg injury very similar to a big 3 yr old buck I had released to be a breeder on property, and that's when I looked up and realized this big doe was actually that big 3 yr old and had dropped his antlers early! I was sick to my stomach, as I had nursed this buck's leg several times and he was doing great. He was a 160" 2 year old and probably about the same at 3 after his leg injury. I couldn't believe I had shot one my best young bucks WITHOUT ANTLERS :( i searched high and low and only found one of his drops, so I couldn't even mount him......

So to recap what we've learned on this thread so far:

1) When trying to kill a deer with a knife, going for the throat is more effective than the ribs:)

2) Never turn your back on a buck, even if he's in another pen

3) Don't underestimate a buck fawn, they can be just a crazy as older deer ;)

4) Always, take a follow up shot on head shot deer, just in case ;) which leads us to our next point...

5) Make sure a deer is dead before you put a tag on it

6) Red Duct tape is clearly less effective than silver

7) When riding a Red Deer always lean into the turns, and for God's sake don't spur him!

8) Late in the season, Bucks that drop their antlers will use fawns to further convince you they're a doe

I feel like we're learning a lot from this thread :D
