week old deer fawn

We have 2 doe's that were both received at 2 weeks old. They are now 1. We just got a new doe fawn, she is 1 week old. We are not breeders, these are pets. There are no local vets that see deer in this area, except one, and she will not see new clients. Neither of our other 2 received any vaccines, only wormed with ivermec pour on last year. I'm wondering if we should be vaccinating them. We have pygmy goats and I give them CD&T but never the deer.



since we are not breeding them, not sure how much we should be doing. I've read a lot on here but I know a lot of people here have deer farms and that is not the case with us. This will be our last one and just wondering if we should be doing more. The two adults we have are healthy and we haven't had any issues with them.
 
Also she doesn't seem to be pooping normal. It's black tar like? Not diarrhea, not solid either. Should we try some sort of probiotic?
 
We did plain yogurt and pumpkin in bottles for our other two. Is it better to use store bought probiotic paste or does yogurt work just as well?

Do you guys have a license to raise deer through the Dept. of Ag? I ask this because it is not legal to have the deer otherwise. I know a lot of people do not realize this and end up in a lot of trouble.
 
Yes we have a license. We are legally able to breed and sell, even though that is not our intent. We are a certified CWD free hobby farm. Our first two were bought by a certified breeder, and the newest baby was as well. We don't intend to breed or sell them, they are strictly pets. But we do have all appropriate paperwork in place.
 
Cool ....unfortunately if things don't start changing in this industry ...I have a feeling a lot more of us are going to be hobby farmers.......let's hope that doesn't happen....enjoy your deer jennac1975
 
So any suggestions on deer vaccines that they should receive. I don't know if we have to do as many things since we only have a couple. The guy we got our first two from said he didn't give any vaccines of any kind. We have a couple big deer farms near us but again they have different kind of issues than we do.
 
I am trying the no vaccine thing this year.....I think sometimes we give our fawns a lot of things they don't need...but everyone has a different opinion and have different programs that work for them....
 
I've given vaccines and also not given with great results from both. We gave a pneumonia vaccine this year and it is doing wonders so far. I really wasn't a believer in them up until the last couple months.

Were you having problems with pneumonia before you started giving the shots?
 
Road construction separated her from her momma. There is a highway going in next to my house in a heavily wooded area that has been home for deer for decades. The Fawn is less than a week. We call her Highway Jane Doe. She's eating good. 4 ounces every 5 hours. Pees good. But only one bowel movement in 2 days. I stimulate her after every feeding and she only pees. She can also pee on her own. She seems very healthly and alert. Started exploring a little today. We r using Fawn replacer. Should I be concerned about bowel movements yet? I'm hoping her system is just adjusting to the formula. We are still trying to connect her with her momma. But this is the fourth day, with no success.

Maybe switch her over to just Red Cap Milk! No muss,No fuss!
 
Yes she should be going number two a couple times a day......an enima might be in order....I have never encountered this problem with a fawn so I am just making a guess here...anyone else?
 
Jennac1975, Contact Josh Newton at Redridge Whitetails he sells a vaccine for newborns as well as full grown deer. He can explain what all it covers. We have been using it on our farm with great success. Good Luck with the new fawns..

We are using vaccines from Newport Labs, the vaccine contained fuso, pasturella, E.coli, Clostridial A, C&D. Just to clarify, we vaccinated does prior to fawning. Pneumonia has been are largest threat for both fawns and adults over the last few years. I have yet to see a case in a fawn this year, which is surprising with the amount of fawns we have and the amount of rain we have received. I honestly believe that vaccinating prior to birth has made a huge contribution to the lack of pneumonia related issues. Newport Labs and Dr. Wagner have been incredibly helpful in the process. If an animal is lost they will send you a kit which you send back after necropsy and they try and diagnose what happened, and you cant get much better than free especially when it comes to animal health.

Thanks Ryan! I am familiar with that vaccine but haven't used it yet. Pneumonia seems to be my biggest battle also.
