I read an article from Missouri Conservation Dept about Chronic Wasting Disease in MO deer. My question is, If a deer with CWD is harvested and eaten by humans can we be effected by this? Can harmful chemicals in the environment (air pollution) move through the food chain to humans?

Well. First of all cwd. Has nothing to do with chemicals in the invroment.. Moving through the food chain. It is a brain disease Cwd is all about the prions in their brain. Folding in on them selves. It is the same as mad cow disease . Scrappi in sheep. And in humans it's called creutzfeldt-jakob disease. It is the same thing. It is just named different for each animal if you will. This keeps the doctors looking smart. Lol. Think of your brain as a cristmas tree. And the prions as your lights.when one goes out. You might not notice it right away. Then another and another. Soon it starts to take affect. After a wile you can imagine when your brain starts to shut the body down. Yep the lights go out
That is the best I can explain it from my own understanding. And no it is not passed from deer to humans. And I can guarantee .you and the rest of the US that judging from the statistics in the last thirty years. That sixty percent of hunters all ready have eaten a deer with cwd. I hope I didn't come on to strong with this post. My encouragement to you and everyone who reads this post to google or research these diseases. And help people to understand them. Before they pass judgement based on lack of knowledge or truth. I say spread the word. Not the disease. Thank you for listening.

There is NO proof that CWD is not passed from deer to humans...anywhere by anybody.

60% of hunters?, I'm guessing you just made up that number on the spot. There is no way that number is accurate.

And yes, I have researched CWD for more than 30 years.

OK show me one case where any body. Any where any time ever got cwd from eating or petting. Or even kissing a deer. Or a cervid of any kind. And if cwd has been around for a long time. And it has. And has only really come to light in the pubic eye. How many people you think ate an animal with cwd just in the US. Expecially if could take up to a few years to even affect an animal. Most deer don't even make it to four years of age. Why? Cause we eat them. The only thing that cwd will kill is a deer. It is transmitted between them. Not from them to us. With all the technology and science these days. And all the cases of cwd. If it was gonna happen it would of. And there are more hunters than ever. And more people interacting with these animals. And not to mention if it was passed from them to us. There would be no more hunting any where. And since for now you can only test a dead animal. What do you do about the deer population. Hmmmm. I know what the game commission would do. All Im saying is prove it or bring me a deer with cwd. And I will eat it. And I will prove it. And maybe saying sixty percent of hunters might be high. But I'm sure people know exactly what I'm getting at. I'm not a scientist or a doctor. But I will eat the hell out of a cwd carcass. And out live them both.

You do know that some of the TSE diseases (more than one btw) have very long incubation periods, some exceeding 40 years such as Kulu. Meaning it won't show symptoms for many, many years.

Your 60% number is a WAG of epic proportions.

CWD has been around since mid 60s, no longer.

dtala,
I believe that is when they put a name on sick deer they brought in that were not acting right to the research facility. I don't believe it was spread from the research facility to the extent it has showed up even if hunter and game farms moved deer around and indirectly spread the disease which did happen.. Common sense would indicate it is a wild life disease and has been around as long as deer have been around just like the other disease of that type in people, sheep and cattle. I don't believe the research facility is ground zero. I do believe the F&G dept has done a great job placing blame for the disease on our industry avoiding the fact the deer were sick wildlife which protected their own money they got from hunters.

Jack, if you had read the early papertrail on CWD there is no other answer to find other than CSU and the research at the Foothills Wildlife Research S`tation in the early/mid 60s resulted in the stage being set for transmission of scrappie from infected sheep to healthy mule deer at the station. Beth Williams, one of the grad students in the research and later Doctor who discovered it was a TSE disease said as much. She would know.

I don't believe there is any other conclusion to reach than that they, the researchers, made CWD come about. They didn't believe that scrappie would jump the species barrier when putting healthy deer into a pen that had help infected sheep. Remember, this is BEFORE the whole Mad Cow outbreak.

I know the research facility did a bad job on containing the sick deer. I know they sold deer to zoos and even let some go. I know mule deer got into the hands of game farmers from Zoo's selling them to game farmers.
I have read the early papers but I remember they put mule deer in the pen because they were not doing well and her job was to find out why. It may be that scrapie sheep disease did jump species but it is just as easy to believe they were sick to begin with CWD. I have no doubt the facility didn't contain the sick mule deer and were very much responsible for spreading the disease.

The mule deer in the pen were not sick. The researchers wanted fawns so they trapped healthy wild bred does and put them in the pens. After the fawns were weaned they released some of the does back to the area just north of Ft Collins, and shipped others to Wyo research station, private zoos, and private high fence places. The does were infected but due to a long incubation period showed no signs of the disease.

Later as the fawns aged they showed signs of an unknown disease. Beth Williams, on of the grad students in the original research studied the deer/disease and found it to be a TSE disease in 1978(as I remember).

Well either way BW and the research facility have really never said they were the cause or they spread the disease. They have been silent when the F&G Dept placed all blame on game farmers as the cause and spread of the disease to the public. Like I said we game farmers have been caught up in the middle of a disease we didn't start whether it was here all the time or BW and the research facility caused CWD.

Jack, there no doubt that Co started the ball rolling on transporting infected deer all over the country. There wern't "deer farms" around then like now to even do it. Prob was no on understood what they were dealing with until late 70's, so better than 10 years of moving infected deer without any knowledge of what was happening.

In the early 90's one could backtrace EVERY incident of CWD all the way back to Ft Collins with the exception of White Sands Missile Base in NM, the talking point for the "been here for ever" folks. Trouble is mule deer were transported from Ft Collins to White Sands so there is that.

It is amazing what is on the net now about Ft Collins. I read a report where it was stated like the truth that no scrappie studies were ever done at TFWRS. No mule deer were placed in any infected pens. Never happened. CWD is anaturally occuring disease and has been around for 1000s of years. Keep telling those lies, but a lot of folks know better.

Then there is the movement of hunted deer taken home to the hunters State from CWD infected area's. We all know the bones, brain and unwanted body parts were dumped in the woods like so many hunters do with their harvested deer and elk after they butcher them. Many more infected animals were moved this way than by game farms. So there it is the true way CWD was spread.
