What med for pneumonia?

well i guess its my time. new to deer farming so not to sure do. Last year I was lucky enough all of my fawns lived and Ive had no health problem with my herd.. This year is however different, I'm loosing one a week it seem like.  life of a deer farmer i guess.. anyway

I had a doe come up to me tonight that was wheezing pretty bad and panting pretty hard. I have asthma and it sounded like she was having an asthma attack. I know I probably should have researched it a little more first but she is my tamest (favorite) doe and wanted to fix her.. She will let you put her in a headlock normally but i swear she smells meds because the minute i tried to vaccinate her she ran to the other side of the pen.

So i darted her with 3 cc of Nuflor

bottle said give 6cc per 100lbs but i only have 3cc darts

was thinking id give her another 3 cc of Nuflor in the morning/tmrw

But now i am wondering if that is even good to do??

any advice would be much appreciated

draxxin is usually more user friendly because you can give 2cc and only have to dart once.

go ahead and giver her 3 more Nuflor tomorrow morn.

if you have had a lot of rain, that will do it on the fawns.  I think the more cover you have in your pens the better when you have a lot of rain.  We have had a lot but fawning pens have quite a bit of grass and we are doing better than last year of sickness.  We lost some to fuso last year.  If I vaccinated this year I would swear it was doing a great job. LOL

Thanks Jerrilee

we haven't had much rain lately, and its actually been pretty nice mid/low 80's in day 60's nights.

I dont have draxxin so i will have to do Nuflor again.

Will another 3cc be enough or should i keep giving more each day?

like i am wondering if i keep giving her more until it goes away?

if she's about 100 lb then I would try to give her 6 next time at once

can you run her in??? if you can get her in a small stall you can get it in her all at once

I dont have a handling system for deer.. In the process of building one.  (realized this spring its to hard to dart/medicate 30+ deer )

Would it be better to just put her down quick vaccinate and reverse her?

Or just hit her with two-- 3cc darts of Nuflor?

We never had to dart a deer or first year in this, now the more you get the more you dart. Lol the problem with darting twice is that darting is stressful in itself. When you give a medication the dosage is determined by the Mic which is the minimum inhibitory concentration. What that means is the minimum dose for effectiveness for the bacteria you are trying to target. So when you give half a dose here and there you are creating bacterial resistance because you are not killing them off. So the closest together you can give the 2 darts the better. This stresses the importance of having the proper meds and most effective route to give them.

Did you see the dart after you darted her? That stuff is some thick medication and is tough to dart! She may not have got the full dosage in the dart! Myself I would knock her down and give the works to her! Nuflor is like syrup and even hand syringe it goes in so very slow! If you do I would give half under the skin and other half in the butt!

I agree with Mike. Nuflor is probably to thick to use for darting. We warm the bottle in the winter while medicating with hand warmers or you can't hardly get it into a syringe if it's below freezing outside or in our handling facility. Nuflor will work much quicker than Draxxin on breaking up the pneumonia. Draxxin will work longer but most of the time also requires a second or third shot 4 or 5 days apart. I would recommend Resflor over plain Nuflor in most circumstances. Giving Dex with the antibiotics seems to work better for us as well.

I have both Resflor and Nuflor. to me the Nuflor seems thinner so that is why I chose that to dart her. I know she got the meds as the dart was still in her this morning :(  shot her a little to close to me I think.

I was able to get another 2cc or so in her this morning just by hand.

Ill see how she does with that and watch her closely.

thanks for the advice guys
