Will the darting harm milk from lactating doe?

My doe was pregnant with two fawns. First fawn born yesterday and is doing great. Second fawn only got front hooves out and stopped. We darted the doe this morning and pulled the fawn and it was not alive. Will the medication from the darting hurt the milk that the live fawn gets today or should I start bottle feeding now?

We faced this situation last week and decided to pull the fawn. partly because of the drugs but mostly due to the chance something may happen to the mother. Adverse effect of the darting, infection, etc. If something did happen 2 weeks down the road getting the fawn to take to a bottle would be pretty close to impossible. Just something to think about.

I would think that the effectiveness of the drug would wear off too fast to affect the fawn.

I hear alot of folks worrying about 2-3-4 week old fawns not accepting the bottle. It is my experience that the fawn may not like you putting it in their mouth, but a hungry fawn will eat, regardless of age. Re-habbers get fawns of this age all the time and they manage to get them sucking.....how come they can do it and we do not seem to believe we can? The remnants of Xylazine and Tolazine or Yobine are residual for 21-28 days. I have put fawns back on their mothers following the tranquilizing of the doe but only afte waiting 8 hours. Where did the 8 hours come from??? I just figured it was long enough, no real science here. The fawns did not show any ill effects, nor did the doe have any issues re-accepting the fawns.

Thank you all for your information. We let the fawn back on her mama late in the afternoon. Both seem to be doing fine today.

I was going to wait... When I had my emergency the other day ...I Was going to pull the fawn and wait 8 hours but the drugs would still be in the milk unless she leaked it out...Was my thoughts so I put the fawn on her right away and watched...Everything was fine 2cc of xylazine and reverser ...The fawn had no reaction.

It was born March 13th and I darted mom on march 27th.

Just my experience

Best of luck
