I just found that one of my yearlings broke off his antler this morning. Being somewhat new to deer farming this is a first for me. Fortunately it was my smallest yearling antler wise, only had maybe 2 inches out of his head. Not much mass either, finger size. Don't know how it happened but looks to be broke off. It looks to be hanging on by the velvet but not much. The stump is bloody but not much running down his face. not sure how to handle this! It supposed to push 90 today so darting is out, but worried about flies and infection. Any thoughts

How tame is he? I had the same thing earlier this year, I was able to pour a cup of blood stop on it and it sealed up pretty quick. It was cooler but flies were out and it seemed to keep them away too. Good luck!

unfortunately 15-20 footer

If heat is an issue you may consider darting just before dark. Have some SQ fluids ready and you should be fine. Clean him up and spray some cover spray on his antlers (Alushield). Soak him down good with some fly spray (everywhere) and whatever you give for antibiotics and vitamins. Good Luck

Jens, you got to watch those flys they can be deadly if they lay their eggs on him and he gets the maggots.....then comes the antler infection and that is hard to knock out.....good luck!
