I have a yearling with the main beam busted off. Anltler is dangling against the side of his head and looks like his eye is starting to swell. Didn't hurt the velvet at all. What should I do. Thanks
If just the antler is broke just sedate him and cut it off.
If it is broken out of his scull plate sedate him, cut bad antler off leaving 3 inch's and cast it to the other antler. We usually put a piece of rebar from the good antler to the bad antler leaving about one inch on each side of the antler and use casting material and just tie it in rebar to both antler's with the casting material. Casting material is the stuff you take out of the foil pack and put in hot water. Move fast as it casts itself fast.
We have put deer back together like that for years.
Call me if you want and we can talk about it or PM me.
This happened to me last year to. Here's what I did and he looks fine this year. I set the skull back in place and taped it. I wrapped the tape around his chin also. Don't worry about taking the tape off, it will fall off
The last two picks happened to me my first year. My cover buck did a super man into the fence and peeled his lip back. I took water activated gorilla glue and glued it back into place and you could never tell. Welcome to deer farming lol
Worked very good. I keep the glue in my supply box now lol. Schafer did a write up on it in the upper Midwest magazine a few years ago and it was a good article. Think it was in s few others also.
Thanks Ryan
I just used electrical tape is all and it worked perfect. I then took a spoon and heated it with a small propane torch and pressed it to the cut antler and vola! I can't even tell which buck it happened to untill I look at the tag from the pics.
That's good congratulations. Hopefully next year he will be OK as long as you got the skull plate put back in the place correctly he should look normal I would think
