This is my first post. I am not a deer farmer. I am a taxidermist and a deer hunter. I hope I can glean some valuable information from the knowledgeable people on this forum. I am getting trial cam pics of a mature whitetail. He has a very badly injured back leg. I am not an expert but it seems as if the buck is past the stage of possibly getting infected but maybe not. Looks to be a break that has healed deformed. Seems to be other wise healty. What do you feel the chances of survival are? I understand that if he does survive the injury, he will likely always have an abnormal antler. I would rather harvest the deer with a larger antler if given the opportunity. I don't want to shoot him if I thought he would be bigger next year. Abnormal is fine but I'd rather it be big and abnormal as I harvest only mature whitetail. On that token I don't want to pass him up hoping for him to be bigger next year if he's going to due anyway. I'd rather harvest him like he is than he die and rot. I hope this post is ok and I hope to receive any advice/information/opinions I can. Thanks in advance.
