One of my few elk that i have has managed to break one of his spikes.....looks to me like it's pedicule and all.....does this mean he will have problems with that side from this point forward? i will be TB testing in three days should we cut it off and fill it full of penicilan and shoot him up with anti biotics?? Let me know your thoughts. see attached! poor guy looks funny....

looks more like skull than peticle. I would saw him and try to reset the base in a more upright position. There is some hope if you can accomplish that.

Dennis, if you cut him are you going to cut all the others in the same pen????? It's hard to tell it could be a one year thing but again it could effect him for life.
I will be putting him down Tuesday for TB testing we will operate then.....we will do our best..............I heard ELK Meat tastes real good......

cut both sides off about 1.5 inches above burr. Cut a piece of wood, maybe a 1x3 just a little wider than the two antlers in thier proper location. Some will use a hole saw and drill so that the two antler stubs can come through the wood. Place antlers through holes and secure with screws. Screws either through edge of board or place another piece of wood (the same size minus holes) on "top", and secure down through top with multiple screws in each antler.

Could put him in mine and James's bottom 30 or unselected elk sale. I would think if you do you would want to leave it hanging. Remember if you fix him it could add value.

It was pretty swollen, but we managed to line up his rack the best we could, screwed in the block, and then cut his antlers so he had less of chance of getting them hung up on something. The next day the fool was rubbing a tree with the block and all. Hopefully he will heal up before he does anymore damage. The block really stabilized the damaged side. Here's a picture of it. And a little SHAMELESS promotion of Texas Tea standing behind him!!!

A few years ago we had a buck break his skull and the antler hung down into his eye. We did the same thing with a piece of wood cut just right and then wrapped it with tape to hold it together. The tape only holds about 3 to 4 days which is just enough time for the bone to take hold and start healing. The tape falls off, the wood falls off and wa la it's fixed. The following year at 2 yrs old he grew a 182" 5x5 clean typical rack. No ill signs from the damage.
The bad news is that winter at age 2 he was killed by another buck from fighting. Even though all the bucks were sawed off. The antler stub from another buck caused a blood clot in the lung that burst and killed him.

Sorry Tim for the slow response Tim........was away this weelend doing the family stuff......you want him he should be at rock bottom pricing right now or maybe we should wait till infection sets in that should drive the price down more!!
