I had a 3yr old buck a few days ago limping, two days ago not, yesterday limping and now today laying alone resting chin on the ground. Never turned out good when the chin touches dirt before but thought I would ask. His ears are back. He let me get 8 feet before I even realized he was there. He is always the first to run (100 footer). He never offered to get up so I backed away. He is not panting and is in the shade. Other bucks in the pen showing no signs. Not sure where to go from here. My guess is its too late but I am listening.

If you can get up on him, crawl up behind him and shove 3cc or draxxin in his butt. And if he won't tolerate that, dart him with the same. And you are right, it might be too late, but ya never know. I had a 100 footer, 1st one to run all the time kinda buck, that took to being so sick that I was able to walk up and give him 3 shots of draxxin 3 days in a row. And he recovered completely and turned back into the ''brown rocket'' he used to be prior to being sick. But you need to do it NOW Rusty, whatever you decide to do. Draxxin, on more than one occasssion, has seemed to have the ressurrection power of Jesus for me! I've brought more than one deer back from what I believed was certainly gonna to die, so don't give up on him yet Rusty. Best of luck!!

Thanks Mark! I will see about getting my hands on some. My vet is out today so I dont think I will be able to do it today :( My buck did get up and is moving now, but is still acting very slow.

Hey Rusty,

sounds like he could have clostridium. 10cc of C&D anti-toxin wouldn't hurt anything. That can be administered Intra muscular. I woul dgive him some B complex too and some probiotics. I know this sounds like a lot, but if you have to tranq him...it can all be done at that time.

Good luck

Rusty - If you decide to knock him down, and as long as he is strong enough to go down and back up (and sometimes that is just the chance we have to take), giving him C&D antitoxin is a good idea as Jack suggested, along with wormer as long as you got him down. Don't know about the heat in Ohio, but if it's anything like here in Illinois...it's hot!! So if you decide to knock him down, do it at VERY first light to avoid as much heat as you possibly can.

Well it didn't take long for him to go downhill. My wife had made the follow up post before I had a chance to give her the skinny. He got up but didn't go far fast. All I could get in him was TSC long acting penicillin but it was too late at that point. From the time I posted originally, it took maybe 3 hours for him to check out. On closer inspection it appears he had an infection from a hoof injury. I thought he had healed from that months ago but maybe it never did go completely away. Thanks for the advice and info to those who offered.

Man I hate that for you Rusty. I always ask myself after I lose an animal if I can learn anything from the outcome. Sometimes you can , sometimes you did all you could do from the point in time you saw the need to. Such is deer farming-Jason DEER CREEK WHITETAILS

Looks like you need to trim his hooves - always better of the two sides are roughly the same length. If it is infected he of course needs antibiotics.

dearjohn - Lol Yeah I don't think Gary read Rusty's last post carefully enough. Gonna pm Gary and let him know. Lol, good antibiotics is right, and I need to get me some of them. lol That's funny.

Rusty if you get a deer down were you can get a IV in it, give it 2000cc ringers that two bags. Put ten cc of vim B + in the bag. That will bring one back faster then anything. I like draxxin for alot effection and the time it stay in the blood stream longer.I have told people about this and they save alot of deer. It is great for snake bites
