Advice for getting started in Alabama

Hey guys I live in Oneonta, Alabama and would like to get into deer farming on somewhat of a small scale. I think I'd like to start with maybe 3-5 does. Does that seem like a reasonble number to ya'll? I've done a lot of reading and learned a lot but all and all I don't really know too much about it. There is another deer farm not too far from my house but I don't know exactly where it is or who owns it. I would love the opportunity to talk to someone or maybe even see their set up if they wouldn't mind. Also I'm not real sure about the regulations and stuff for Alabama. I know we have "closed borders" but other than that I'm not sure what is regulated. If any of you have any advice I'm definately open to it. Thanks in advance and if anyone had rather email me then [email protected] will do. Thanks.

Give me a call. 205-826-6965. I will help you any way possible. Just buy smart and you will do fine

Hey Kyle, you will have a blast raising deer! Please visit as many farms as possible before you even consider buying one. Every breeder in Alabama has good deer, so don't get caught up on names. If I can be of any help give me a call 205-296-0062.

I would start out with the best bottle feed does you could to go along with what Jason said. Call me 334-346-2255 would love to show you the farm.

Ya'll are awesome and I will be calling! I'm seeing where big mistakes could get really costly so I'm gonna try to start off headed in the right direction if possible.

I live on 17 acres and what I have in mind is using a 2-3 acre field that is adjacent to my barn. It's pretty flat and for the most part clear but there are several small apple and pear trees in it. I don't know much but it seems like it would be pretty good to start out with....

believe there is a deer breeders association in alabama, Get a hold of Terry Kennedy and he will point you in the right direction.

Hey guys I was able to go to Ricky Cleveland's farm yesterday. I don't know much about deer farming but man, he's got it going on! He was very nice and I definately learned alot. I'm pretty pumped about getting in this, I've just got to figure out what price point I want to get in at. I can see where this little adventure could get expensive! lol

I would strongly advise you to take your time and look at all options before you jump in. It can get expensive and you can get burned real quick. Decide if you are going to raise shooters or breeders. If you do not have deep pockets you will be raising shooters so buy your stock accordingly. No one will care how much you paid for your deer when you are ready to sale shooters.

Having said that, get good stock and there are plenty of people here with good stock.

Thanks. Yeah I haven't bought any yet and really haven't looked. I'm really just trying to talk to some folks and get as much info and advise as I can.
