Well as a new deer farmer im kinda lost as to what to do. I had a two year old buck get spooked and ran in to the fence and broke off one antler at the base .They where only grown out about 4 inches at this point. Any advice as too what i need to do would be greatly appreciated. Im Worried about infection and what not. Thanks

It will scab fast, if it was rainy or cool and overcast then there shouldn't be a fly issue. However, even at that, keep a very close eye out on it. Any flies on it could be dangerous threat for infection. I had to yearling bust up their racks during the evening a couple weeks ago, They scabbed over well that night and the flies didn't ever get attracted to the wounds.

Your biggest concern is flies and maggots. If he scabs over without any problem he will be ok, if the flies start on it, you need to put Cylence or another long lasting fly repellant on it.

Yes just as everyone said above flies are your worst enemy......they have a spray out that acts like a band aid.....you spray it on and it keeps the flies from being able to get on the would and lay eggs which turn into maggots.....and that's where the infection will start.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It seems to be scabbing over right now so hopefully we wont have any problems

We had the same issue. Saw one of our buck yearlings had a broken horn (and hanging) about an inch up a few days ago. He had blood running down his face. It stopped bleeding for a day and then started again. I saw flies on it through my binoculars so we ran him in the chute and treated him with blue coat and alu shield

Alu shield....that's the band aid I was talking about.....good stuff!!

That brings up a question.

Has anyone else had deer freak out at the sight of aluma shield on other deer?

Last fall we sedated and cut the racks off of our yearlings as they were starting to shed velvet. We sprayed the bases with aluma shield. When they started to wake up a couple of the bucks got very nervous and were even blowing at each other. One of them within seconds of waking up went absolutely berserk and started running and blowing and at one point hit the fence at a deadrun. This buck was one of the calmest ones we have and never acted like this before. When trying to figure out what was causing this, i realized that it was a very bright and shiny day and the sunlight was reflecting off of the aluma-shield. The bucks looked like they had mirrors on their foreheads. We had to isolate the one in the coral for a couple days until the aluma-shield darkened up. The rest of the bucks got used to it fairley quickley.

Todd...i saw nothing out of the ordinary after putting mine back in the pen. This is my first time using as well. There is another spray called Catron IV ,, it's blue, but not sure if it's a bandage per say.
