Is it too soon to dart deer with antler drop? I have a couple bucks that like to get a little too close for comfort for me and would feel much better with the antlers off. plus I hate to knock them down just to cut them off. were also doing our TB testing in about a month and i just dont see this going well with the bucks still having antlers on.

If you trank to draw blood cut them then or if running in handling chute cut them then if not they will be on until Fed. Just my 2 cents

Ben this is a great question and I hope someone with knowledge jumps in, however it seems that folks who use the stuff are all hush hush about it.
I have not used it as of yet. Planning to give it a try this year so I can combine some bucks into one pen and not have the antlers flying around like crazy. I was thinking about doing it in Jan or Feb but was told that might be too early. Rumor I heard is if you use it too early the antlers will actually start to regrow again because the testosterone levels haven't dropped enough. Maybe that explains why some bucks seem so far ahead of others in spring and early summer. I am not interested in manipulating the time they start growing. I just want to stop the fighting that comes when you combine bucks together. My pen space is limited now so I need to find ways to comfortably house the bred does come fawning time.

Coby, Have you used it in prior years as well? Wondering if you have had issues with them regrowing if used to early.

Roger. Yes I have used it before. The antlers or cutoffs will drop at about 12 days after. It never effected anything the next year. They never start earlier than normal and did not effect any in there growth. I have 1 that is a terror on the top of his head and I darted him with 2 cc 3 days ago and can tell a big change in his attitude.

Good thread. I have been wondering about this. It seems like it might give bucks some extra growing time, but I would not want to mess them up either. It makes you wonder if some guys have been doing it for years. I would like to do it instead of knocking ours down. At the same time if my shooters could gain an extra few inches, I would not complain. I would love to hear more feedback.

I agree. I have never seen a cut off buck kill any other deer in alll my years. To do something for the health of the animal i say yes. To give something to get a jump or make more inches...Not so much! I guess if i had to do it.. I sure would!

I am not wanting to use the stuff the add inches nor get a jump start on the growing season. I have stopped cutting antlers because I see it as a waste of time. They damage their heads fighting and ruin their antler growth. I need to combine some bucks a little sooner this year to have room for fawning does. So I want to drop the antlers sooner and within the same time frame.
And by the way I have had sawed off bucks kill other bucks. When you grow big deer they are strong and don't need a complete set of antlers to kill another deer. So I guess since Mother Nature doesn't use CIDRs and PMSG to breed does and doesn't use antibiotics or dewormers I guess you don't use those things either then? Some folks are pretty high on their horse!

In order to have a so called death battle or even injury you would have to have 2 bad *** bucks in the same pen..Have you never watched what the real deer farmers do on the kieth warren show that stop those fights from goin down. You should take a look at it some sunday afternoon! You could learn something....If you are not one of those ones that knows it all..Forget i asked that one!!

What works for one farm or farmer may not work for another. People are on here to educate themselves. We had 2 bucks cut that were fighting, bleeding and what do u do? Let them kill themselves? Get infected? Or cool their jets? i doubt there are any here that has pens to keep them separate. I blew up on nothing other than the fact that drugs are not always the answer, Period!! Have you ever seen a farm leave one antlered buck in a pen to keep others in line? Maybe you could make some calls to farmers that have been in the business for years without the use of drugs.
If someone showing the truth on something is a fool in your eyes then we need a hell of alot more fools in this world let alone this industry!
