I saw a post that said we all knew how to avoid aspiration on scheduled times when we would be putting our animals to sleep for whatever reason. I would say we all don't know what to do for AI when we sedate our animals.

We need to treat this like any operation, NO FOOD OR WATER FOR 24 HOURS before we plan to sedate the animal as this will help stop problems like aspiration as one of the complications from sedation. Just thought I'd state this for our new people in the industry.

Spot on Jack................It is NO Different than surgery and should be part of a regiment ALL deerfarmers should follow to the T! If YOU went to the hospital....... YOU would hold them to a LESSER standard ?

I don't believe 12 hours would be enough but would help a little for sure. I'm sure 24 plus hours would elliminate excess food from the rumen which should stop the food from coming up.

We keep our animals on just ground so they will not even be able to eat bedding.

We routinely go with 36 hrs. I've seen a few regurgitate with full rumens at 24 hrs. Always remember what's important after fasting- only feed hi quality alfalfa and half the water after surgery then full feed and water the next day(gradually return to full ration). Fasted deer when woken up will go to the water trough and engorge on water then fill up on pellets. This will cause them to bloat and develop "slushy gut syndrome" and set up terrible problems. Just my 2cents worth. God bless and good luck
