Blindness

rehabgal

any ideas? My gal has a blue/opaque haze over her eyes with what looks like cataracts on 1. she is wobbly and unsteady. knows my voice and calms down with me. had a massive goose egg come up on her head last night and ruptured this morning.. milky and stinky.. thought it was brain matter, hubby (gotta love the pharmacist) said NO it was infection coming OUT. keeping it cleaned out. Her appetite is good considering she doesnt take the bottle well (though i use it to give her meds), is drinking alot of water/grape pedialyte (she dunks her entire snout in the water) and is eating some sweet feed with apples and carrots chopped up finely in it.. she is so skinny and beat up from the car hit.. she is urinating at LEAST once really good a day, and i stimulated her to get pellets in a kind of green slime.. but then she is on antibiotics, probios and pepto to coat her stomach..i want to keep her hydrated and work on the feed as we go.

I know she has been thru alot for a little girl, and my vet is a GODSEND, but looking for any ideas to help a gal out please....she is probably 2 months old give or take a week.

i can say that we had a dog with an eye just like this that had to have the eyelid sewed shut for 2 weeks. he had trauma to it and it healed fine...but dont think she'd do good stressed out anymore right now, but may have to consider...........she does notice movement though

I had an injured fawn this year that got dirt packed in his eye during his struggling. The eye was completely white and had discharge, vet thought it might need to come out, but wanted to try to save it. Put Vetropolycin ointment (got from vet) in eye three times daily, and in less than 2 weeks, you could not tell the difference between the eyes unless you really knew to look for it. When we started he had no reaction to movement in that eye, and after healing he definitely had vision, I don't know how much, but at least some. You know when they are healing good cause they see you coming with the cream and it gets much harder to sneak it there:) Good luck!

Head/eye infections can cause permanent blindness. I would get her on antibiotics soon.

yeah, she has been on antibiotics twice a day since day one here, and i am using an antibiotic eye drop as well.. i was looking for a little hope, and i seem to have gotten it. i am more so worried about the wobbles an unsteadyness but i guess that will go with the blindness..shes worth the effort to try ! shes full of chunks of fur missing due to the collision...... poor girl, had a rough start to life ! She is familiar enuf that she calls me when i leave her now....

thanks

ok, i am gonna give this my all.. gait is steadier, but having a heck of a time with feed...a little too old for a bottle, though she does try, whole snout goes in bowl of water or pedialyte, is crazy about apples and carrots shredded together with some gerber baby rice cereal and probios added (thats how i get her antibiotics in her) she is not caring for the pellets, goat chow, or any kind of feed or hay ! i know she was traumatized and really banged up by the car-deer incident on Labor Day, but she seems so much better. calmer, can be let out of the crate and follows me around when i talk to her. her pellet poop is a bit bound but hoping the apples will fix some of that..still visually impaired, but i am keeping rx eye drops 3 x a day and will see how it goes. anyone ever kept a blind deer? luckily she is prob about 2ish months old and still toally spotted....i do have a secure place for her to stay when i get her outside, vet suggested inside crated right now due to vision and to let her heal up good...........baby steps what i call it.......

i could really use some help her, with ANY ideas or suggestions.........

I remembered a couple of things about our fawn with the bad eye. Our vet said to keep it in dimly lit/dark areas as bright light could be irritating to eye while healing. Also said he prefered the ointment because it is heavy and oily and stays in place for a long time so it makes a kind of protective barrier. The fawn didn't seem to have too much problem with getting around, but he only had one eye affected. Also, it took a good 2 weeks to get that eye looking better, so give her time.

Ask your vet about some dex or banamine for the inflamation behind the eye and for pain, and about thiamine. Be sure you do not use an opthamalic ointment that has any steroid in it, if there is a scratch or ulceration on the eye, the steroid in the ointment will do more damange to it.

thanks ya'll !!!!!

she is in my sewing room/ deer nursery where there is no direct sunlight...only indirect. i wont take her outside yet. basically doing the same routine that i had to do with my chihuahua for 3 weeks...then slowly outside for a few minutes at a time to accustom to the light....

the eye drops are what we used on the chihuahua when he had eye damage and my husband too (different bottles, lol). no steroids in it.just an antibiotic. vet said he wanted to wait a week before steroids, i have plenty of dex on hand. she is on bactrim 2x a day also. there doesnt seem to be any pain involved.....i can clean it gently(to keep the lashes soft and free) , no discharge and she doesnt even flinch.i did a washcloth bath to get the dirt off her and check for fleas or ticks.. but i will ask about the banamine and thiamine today when i call him......she did get a 3cc b12 shot and it seemed to perk her up

the problem is that i have fallen for this gal.....so my dad has fixed a special place for her if she doesnt regain eyesight where she can be safe from any and all critters (totally contained chicken wire then reinforced with goat fencing thru out, then shadecloth in her stall area), have some room to roam around, and maybe settle any new fawns i get come spring..... a bull couldnt get in there.......lol

Rehabgal: First, let me say your girl is beautiful, and I really hope she starts feeling better! It breaks my heart that she has had such a rough start in her life, it really does. BUT, I am so happy that someone such as yourself is there to help her and care for her. If rehabing was legal here - that is exactly what I would be doing. But, stupid Ohio law changed recently to where deer cannot be rehabilitated - I REALLY hate that.

Second, it is SOOOOO easy to fall in love with these precious lil critters :) .......I know!! When I first laid eyes on my girls - I instantly fell in love with them! Nina was 2wks old when I brought her home and Faline was 1 1/2 wks old. And even though Faline is now 4yrs old and Nina is 3yrs old - they are still my babies. I absolutely LOVE them and will fight a giant to protect them! I am so happy to hear stories of little fawns who need help and people like you are there to care for them - makes the world seem a little better. Please keep doing what you are doing - it's pretty awesome :)

Gail

thank you Gail. i have always been around animals and always had a yard full of them.. started rehabbing when a squirrels nest got destroyed and we raised Skittles....It was something to get permitted here, as i was told there would be no more in my area (i am the only one). its expensive, totally time consuming, and back breaking. this is my life for now. i dont leave the house for more than 5 hours at a time period....no vacation weekend for awhile. but my hubby, vet, and family is great. I know i cant save everyone, but i can try.. and if it comes to being put down, well i will know that i gave it my all.....My boy, Itty Bitty is gonna have to go out to the wild, but Easy Does It will be my home gal.....its 105 with heat index here and theyare curled up in the play yard with the cats sleeping as no worries in the world......i can keep her if she is unable or unfit to be returned to the wild.....my goal is to help them and get them out there...but she is different. I am so new at this, but our life has turned upside down and thats the way i like it. with the building going on and the new fencing reinforced (but they will be able to jump it when they are ready to leave home ), we should be up and ready by spring to handle whatever comes my way.....

i am AMAZED at the wealth of info and compassion here. I realize that 99% of the folks here are deer farmers, per se and into big bucks $$$ too.. I spend hours reading and learning and praying. it is so nice to meet great folks that are willing to help me with my problems.......

I love it! I checked into rehabilitation in my area and was encouraged by the wildlife officer to do it - as he did not have anyone local to take injured/abandoned animals. I really wanted to do it to help fawns since they are my absolute FAVORITE! Not to be heartless, I know other wild animals need help, but my heart belongs to fawns/deer.

I can relate to no vacations. I hate leaving my girls. I can't relax when on vacation because I spend my whole time worrying about them. I just took vacation this week and what did I do?......stayed home!

You're right about this site. Lots of great people that are willing to share knowledge and experience with others. I am not "in the business" - I raise 2 deer as pets. I love them deerly :)

Give 5cc of B12 complex IM once a day for 3 days along with the meds Robbie recommended. Thiamine (B) can cause a seizure in a deer this young and right now this is not a cure or kill situation. The deer in the picture you posted is still young enough to require a bottle.

how much dex ? oral or shot?

At 2 months +/- a week, you should be OK to give thiamine. Scott is right, in a young fawn, it can be toxic, and that is why I want you to check with your vet first. Viatmin B complex is a mix of the B vitamins, including B12 and thiamine. I usually use it as a sub-cu injection, personally. It contains some thiamine, but sometimes it is good to also give some straight thiamine too, depends on the situation.

As for the dex, it will depend on several other factors and physical symptoms. Banamine if there is any fever or noticable pain associated with the injury, but dex is the better choice in some cases, especially with possible intracranial inflamation. As for dosage, somewhere between .5 and 10 cc / 100 lb. - totally varies based on a million different variables, and who you ask, so talk to your vet. It will be an IM shot.

ok.. thanks..............yeah since the antibiotics that vet has told me to use I have on hand in pill form, we been crushing and adding to the bottle...

looks like i am losing my little girl this morning......didnt greet me at 630 for feeding. have done treatments, feedings, loving, but the car accident must have done some major damage on the inside... shes down, wont stand, wont eat....i know its nature and shes only been here 5 days, but my heart is breaking and i sit here crying......

with her damages, the deputy should have put her down when he found her, but once she got here, we had to give it a try...i can truthfully day that we have done everything possible and she has taught me so much

So sorry, Rene. I know you did all you could, it is never easy losing these battles. At least your little girl was receiving maximum attention and love during her struggle. Everyone here has suffered heartbreak from loss, mother nature can be cruel. Just try to keep your spirits up you will also have many victories.

That is so sad. I tried to save one with a broken leg that needed to be amputated. We battled for two and half weeks and then he passed without warning. Fine in the morning, gone six hours later. Even when you know the odds are long and you shouldn't get attached, I haven't found it possible. They are too darn easy to love. Take comfort that you know you did everything possible, sometimes it is just too much for their little body. Might spare them a long life of dealing with problems. Just give your other one a hug, and keep on going, as hard as it is. All of us here know what you are going through and feel for you.

she's gone now.......died with me holding her and crying.....i could NEVER have imagined falling in love so hard and so fast with something in 5 days.......at least she didnt die on the side of the road alone.......silly i know

thank you
