Broken Leg

D.C, Sorry to hear about the stroke.. hope things get better for you.

deerchaser..I would avoid amputation if possible. We had a doe get her back foot hung in the fence (i suppose) around her ankle and tore most of her foot off exposing the bone. and for fear of infection we had it amputated around the knee. she is doing well two years later but has yet to live breed for the last two years so we AI'd her this year to extreme sneakers hope we get something out of her as she is a pretty good doe..

Dc, Gald you found out what was wrong.

If the leg is not sticking out of the skin, leave it alone.

We had a doe shatter her leg this we darted her put a cast on six weeks later cut it off and she is doing fine cant tell it was broken, we had another deer leg brake and it healed on its own. I would be keaping track of cost you might be turning this in to the dog owners insurance

Dc. The whole clan wants to hear you get better. Who else can deliver high quality hillbilly entertainment! Maybe less sausage and more elk on the pizzas now. We're all pullin' for your recovery.

I don't play with dogs. If I see him I shoot first ask questions later. These three belonged to my nephew but I have to much invested to allow dogs to ruin everything.

We had some dogs last year running our deer from the outside of the pens... one doe

run head on into the corner of the pen and broke her neck.... skint and stressed and the rest of them out real bad..but didn't loose anymore... i haven't seen the dogs since??

we have a souped-up electric fence running most of the perimeter now...

Has an interesting leg problem about six weeks ago. Went out to see the deer and one of the AI does had a broken front leg just below the knee with no skin broken. Well I went in and got the dart gun and put her down as I wanted to still AI her. Being I was alone I just cast the leg where she fell and reversed her. Two days later the cast fell off. The problem was it was 10 degree F and the cast product froze and then just fell apart. Darting this deer again was not on the table because when she saw me she was gone.

As working her to get her darted would cause more problems I left nature take it's coarse and in three weeks she was walking on the leg. Just goes to show sometimes nature will take care of them without our help. Had she had any infection or problems I would have figured out something to get her darted and given medical help. I have left many broken legs to heal by themselves if they were not compound fractures and they always seem to get well. It is amazing they can be so resilient.

I had a buck break his front leg above the knee and three weeks he was walk with a limp at five weeks i had trouble telling witch leg was broke.
