I have a buck fawn born 8/15/2010 which is normal this far south. He looks like he has a serious rash around his tale and is swollen. He acts normal, eating well, peeing and pooping. There is a small amount of blood around his tale. I put a topical antibiotic on the area. Any ideas?

Is it ant bites? That's usually what it is here. But what you've done already is what i'd do

It is possible that it is ant bites but if it is they are very concentrated on that area. I don't know about the doe, I have never seen her feed him. He is very healthy otherwise.

Probably ant bites then. That where they go. To the butt and tail. Everytime. Also the cord if it's a newborn. Should be fine.

It was fire ants. Traeted with antibiotic creme and hydrcortizone. Cleared up nicely. The swelling was around the tale and he was swollen badly. He must have laid there and let them chew on him.

is it safe to treat the ants with fire ant killer or can that be harmful to the deer? i havent had any problems treating mounds out where the goats are, but not sure with deer......

thanks ! we have fire ants awful after all these rains and i try to keep them under control
