read the other posts on here labeled as EHD, they have some suggestions.

Good luck!

Toadman,

I am afraid at least from what I have read on here that you are dealing with EHD......as Jens said look at the threads on here labelled EHD and you will see what has worked for others.......and yes a lot of deer die within days of getting EHD...but not all of them.....and from your explanation of symptoms it sounds to be EHD....where are you located in PA?

harrisburg pa. . what do you think i should do for the buck that lived he is walking stiff and looks like he is lossing weight ? i did call my vet and told them what was going on and they said it's probably ehd and theres nothing they can do for me . is there any way to tell by looking at them if they have a fever ? what causes them to saliva ? lack of oxygen or what ? also on preventing i have a bug zapper with the blue lights for killing mosq. and bugs at night if i hooked that up would that kill the bugs causing this ? thanks for all the replies . i did read all the replies on the ehd i'm just new to this never had this problem till this year .

Man......I can feel your frustration and I wish I had the answers ...but....to date I have not had to deal with this virus......I wake up everyday thanking my lucky stars......it is not that far off from me so I'm just praying frost comes before the stinking midges........someone please give toadman some sound advice.......I can't imagine the stress this causes on you....hang in there and I know someone will help soon.....

I just put out my bug zapper the kind that have the blue light and draws bugs in an electric shocks and kills them . I sat it on cement to see if it kills the nu-see-ums gnat and to my amazement there where a bunch dead under it so just thought I would let you guys know it helps but I'm sure it won't kill them all .

I use the plastic bag and little tub fly traps and I'm amazed at the difference around my property. Last year we had a big problem with them with our chickens and when we put veggies up from the garden this year we used traps from April on and have had no trouble even around the trash cans!!! Just a little idea to help control fly population. We use two or three per acre!

The basics of treating ehd are:

1cc/100lbs dex

3cc/100lbs excede

I would hit them with dex every 24 hrs and excede every 3.5 days. Usually by the second round of excede you know if they are going to make it.

There is other stuff to do but, this is standard protocol down here.

Do not use banamine if you think its ehd. Banamine is tough on the GI system and so is ehd.

They drool and foam because their tongue swells. Ehd is brutal and in lumens terms it's like throwing thousands of glass shards down their veins. The steroids constrict the veins and make the walls thicker and the excede helps with the other stuff they pick up while they are weak like pnuemonia.

We have also been lucky and I have only treated 1 doe all year and she is doing well now. She was one of our northern strains but, she made it through last year and this year so far!

Good luck.

If they are showing signs dont give them the vaccine. It lowers the immune system to EHD for about three days. Not saying it always happens but every sick deer i gave it to has died.

i got dexamethasone today i dont got excede but is draxxin the same as excede ? the 1 that is still living has been 1 week and 1 day i gave him 2cc draxxin 1 day then the next day 3cc draxxin he is walking stiff legged but no drooling silva and is eating food but looks skinny . would you medicate him with anything like the dexamethasone ? i also put dumor electrolytes supplements in there water last night . so far the only ones getting sick are in the same pen an are yearling bucks . all my deer are healthy before this happened so it can happen to anybody so be prepared and pray .

I would deffinatly give 6-8cc b-12. probably 6cc excede. If you look under the thread unknown sickness there are a few recipes people gave me. Electrolytes are deffinatly a good thing

would fortified vitamin b complex be ok my vet is out of vitamin b ? if so how should i give it i don't want to put the deer down to adminster is there a way from doing that mybe in the feed or water i have the kind in the brown bottle that you use a syringe . thanks for all the information so far

Toadman you should be able to pick up vitamin B at your local Tractor Supply store .......if you have one around.......

We had 2 go down with EHD this week. One is now eating and doing really well and the other died within hours. Hard to know why one response to meds and vaccine and the other didn't. Very frustrating!!! The one that is alive we go out every hour and make him stand and walk a bit. Not sure if this made a difference but the other wouldnt even move.

I am not a vet but, that seems like a lot of Draxxin to me. Draxxin stays in the system for a good while so I would be careful or maybe get a vet to give you some advise there.

I don't see any reason you can't give them dex every 24 hours though at 1cc/100 # body weight.

I am also not sure exactly how draxxin varies from excede but, draxxin is more of a respritory med I believe.

Again, I do only what I put in my other post. If it is a very expensive animal we will use an IV and administer the very expensive treatment from Dr Ables in addition to the dex/excede.

We don't use the EHD vaccine as the reports I saw showed that it didn't show any changes in the antibodies in the animals blood. Does it work or not? I have no clue but, we don't use it. I don't think it hurts but, I am not certain it helps.

Good luck and I hope you get him straightened out!
