Bucks Sheding

I've had bunch of wild bucks hanging around my back yard for a couple weeks now and 3 had full sets on when they first showed up but as of this morning they have all shed except for the biggest one(160 class) and he is only carrying one side. I still have one 2 year old in my pen carrying both sides and you can see the new growth starting around his bases. I hope he sheds soon!

I don't know how you guys cope with the disgust as the biggest current buck on the farm hangs onto his antlers each day-when I do chores every day (whether dark or light out) I look at the buck running around in my pens, like a kid on Christmas morning, only to be disappointed that the Grinch came and left the antlers on the buck. I realize everyone says they've had bucks until mid April that hang on to their racks, but this one has done me few favors and the antlers deserve to be let go and scored...very frustrating! Really frustrating when I consider younger bucks already have antlers growing that are visible to the naked eye-seems he's wasting good growing time. Thursday in the midwest this week is calling for 75 degree temps. I'm still unsure of exactly what causes the drop, but the conditions would seem right....

our last buck dropped both sides last night ( a yearling that was not cut)

when baileys whitetails started this post is was bout his breeder buck and mine.well here it is apr 2 and my year and half old is still holding on to both sides and its starting to worry me a little. cause at this time last year he was already about an half inch out growing. he was not cut and they are really crowning. should i be worrying or not?? any adive anyone can keep would be helpful. i know theres no real science to antler sheding it kinda has to take its course. look forward to hear ya all have to say.

thank yah , Dan

An Amish deer farmer put a 2 yr old down last week and took a hammer and a flat screwdriver and poped the cut-offs for him. Don't know about that but he's starting to scab up good so I guess it must have worked ?

Our last buck just dropped off his last cutoff, one side 2 weeks ago and finally yesterday lost the other side.

Now ready to" watch them grow"

the other say i made a post bout my buck still holding on. well this mornin i was feedin um apples and i grabed a hold of the one side and he yanked back and off it came. i wish i would have been holdin on to both sides lol. the bottom of the the base was all white no blood so all i can think is that the wax ring was keepin um from coming off. now with the temps being in the 70s during the day here in pa. should i be worrin bout it getting infected? or worrin bout bugs and flys gettin into the antler hole?? or will it be ok??

thank yah ,Dan

I have three elk and not one of them has shed yet..........what is going on is this normal for elk????? They actually want them off as they keep sparring and rubbing their antlers I believe trying to knock them off......i wasn't worried but their starting to make me a little concerned.............Does anyone know about elk that could give me some advice??

It is 4/7/10 and my one 3 year old buck still has both his antlers. All the others dropped within a week after the first day of spring. Pretty normal for all of them here. But this guy, he's hanging on. He lost them with the other bucks last year but this year he's really behind. The others are starting to show so I'm starting to worry about this guy. I'll chew my nails for another week or two but after that I think I might have to dart him and see what is the deal. Could I be bordering on the edge of a problem?

I have one with both sides still and last year i had one hang on till 2nd week of may just don't understand. Anyone else have deer still holding on?

had a friend TB testing yesterday, had one buck lose one antler in the squeeze but couldn't pull the other one off, so they put him back out into the pen and it was off an hour later

We still have some elk and deer with antlers on their heads, but it isn't so unusual for us this far South.

I have 2 bucks not drop yet. The one has both the other one side.

The one with both sides I had ahold of them today and could not pull them off. In Ohio

Looks like new starting to grow around them and ther not cut. the hole anter is there. the buck 1.5 year old

We had our last buck shed 9 days ago he is a yearling and he keeps knocking off his scab over his pedicle. Yesterday he had some major yellow and really thick puss build up on it and today it wasn't quite so bad. He is bottle fed and very tame so getting close andd checking on him is not a problem. Just wondering if this is normal or if there is any precautions we should take in antibiotics or something. The flies have not messed with him yet either I am keeping a very close eye on that. Any input from you guys and gals is appreciated. Thank You.

Maybe spray it with some Furall or blue coat if you can get that close to him. This would help with the infection and keep flies away since its been so warm. Probly be alright either way but would be a good percaution.

Thanks Virgil he will be very easy to apply anything we would need to him. My only worry was if it would irratate his pedicle because then we would heve a bigger mess on our hands I would think.??

I don't think it would irratate at least i never noticed it irratating any of mine when applied. Should help infection heal quicker so it would not irratate as long.
