Currently working on designing our shop for taxidermy and other art mediums.

I am going to build a shop next to our deer pens just for final mounting and live reference. Did'nt know if someone had some ideas on they're own buildings or experiences that could apply to the live reference shop.

One issue that has came up is CWD transferral from mounting specimens from like the deer skull plate or other.

At first was thinking of having a door where my tame buck or doe can come in while I'm working or at least just have a feed/stall room attached to the shop where I can observe through the windows and not have them in my pockets while trying to work.

mine is just out behind my shop a window would be nice, but you can't get the detail you need out of a window. I like to use my fingers anyways. If I have trouble with an earbutt muscle trying to get it to look right I go out into the pen and feel the muscles. I have a buddy that is a taxidermist as well and he raised his deer like a dog and it is in his shop under his feet LOL it's a pain sometimes working in his shop
 
Thanks, for replying, Thats what I was thinking, Have a sliding doorway that can open up into the stall were they normally eat and bed. If they get in the way, they go back out.

Please do not do any skinning from that shop, make it for final mounting and finish work only. Besides the danger of CWD there is also a chance that if the state comes in to do an inspection of your heard that they may question the taxidermy shop in too close of proximity to your deer pens. You could set yourself up to being quarantined, or worse. I used to have fawns in my taxidermy shop, as soon as they found CWD in NY I moved them way to the other side of the yard. (like 500 ft.) And I also started having my skulls put into barrels that went to a rendering plant instead of digging a hole and burying them. Didn't want to give the state any excuses.

Although having live references right there when your working is very helpful.

I have heard through the grapevine that ny might make it a law that no deer can be brought in from a farm from any state if the owner of that farm has a shop of any kind.

You guys really do need to do some looking into that practice.If you do work from states that have cwd you can transmit it into your own herd very easy.All it takes is one of your deer to come in contact with a hide or some used salt. Just be real careful for all of our benefits.
 
I really appreciate your responses. We do not have CWD here in Ohio and none of us want to get it. I am being educated on this from you and others from other states.

My deer are going to be enrolled in Ohio's voluntary CWD program.

I don't want them to get it nor our wild ones.

I was leaning more to doing the skinning and fleshing etc., where I always have , our Garage, so for easy cleanup with a high pressure washer in clorox bleach.

Actually I'd rather have the reference barn just for that, mounting the commercially tanned hides onto the forms and adjusting for accuracy.

I am going to contact the state vet to get his advice as well.

He knows all about my plans and intent.

After doing more research on CWD transmission from dead cervids, such as mule deer or Elk, it would seem that plans may have to be changed . Transmission can occur from dead carcasses to live deer thus, wild deer. AY.YI.YI.............
