CWD charges

Guys I do not not normally respond or post on these forums but I would like to let all know that there is a growing number of individuals who believe we are at a crossroad in our industry. We can continue to negotiate and compromise until we negotiate and compromise ourselves right out of business or become so heavily regulated we can no longer stay in business or we can say enough is enough. This is really a very simple matter; continue with the status quo or take control of our own destiny. This is our industry. We certainly need to control the spread of CWD and minimize the risk to captive as well as all wild cervids but not to the point of shutting down an industry or putting hard working farmers and ranchers out of business when or if it is discovered in the next state or the next deer pen. I encourage all to ask the question, " am I better off today than yesterday and how many of my friends are no longer in the business." There is a tremendous amount of work being done to correct the current CWD standards. This has been a slow process but is rapidly coming to an end. Industry will have to decide whether to accept these revisions or to say we do not want them. Either way just know there are many who are working to keep this industry the very best in can be. I invite everyone who is a part of the industry to be on the industry conference call April 9 at 8:00 PM central time. This is the American Cervid Alliance meeting of associations to discuss and plan industry's future course.

This will be great. But remember some states are not as big as others and you might get the old....You play ball our way our we will shove the bat right up your ... ! Kind of answer. A shut down state sure cant grow! Please post contact info.

We need to scrap the standards and come back with a revised edition of them that the industry can better live with. This can be achieved if the wildlife agencies are kept out of the talks.

Easy buddy....I said a closed state! Not a closed border. I must say that even that is starting to look good. At least i would still be able to do business with someone. Better than i have right now!!!!!!!

At USAHA, last October, Patty announced that 17 CWD testing labs were going to be updating their CWD testing equipment and, therefore, industry may see an increase in testing expenses. We asked her if the new equipment may reflect more "sensitive" results, and she replied she did not know.

From my notes, she reported that they are hoping and working toward the ELISA testing method. Will help with turnaround time. I would imagine, she will give more updated info in upcoming USAHA meeting. Again, important u attend.....

Also since USDA is no longer funding CWD testing, it opens the price up to the "free market". I don't know that there is anything we can do about this issue. I wonder how much USDA spent annually to fund CWD testing....maybe we need to add this issue to 2014 DC Fly-in....USAHA conference.....I will be happy to report the increased expenses for u.

In our court case, Dr. miller testified that Colorado charges $17.00. Maybe that is Fish and Game rate ...... As of now, NSVL charges $40.00

it would take new regulations to regulate the regulations we have now.and to regulate it all over we would still have regulations that would fail on our part.we just keep on loosing.this is not funny.it`s sad....my inspector came last week to check out one white deer i have as a pet.she said i should go on another program then she does not have to inspect me anymore...get this,if i take the other program i am not allowed to sell the deer to anybody that raises deer.i can only sell it to a hunting reserve.this is a bunch off crapola.nothing surprizes me anymore.another regulation.will this crap ever end.robert

My testing fee just went to $110.00 ! How long do we need to pay to loose or harvest our own animals ? A'm I the only person who just dosen't understand why we need 100% testings if we want to ever sell anything ? How can we justify paying $2.00 a pound to harvest and eat one of our own deer ? No way would the cattle industry put up with such bullcrap and hey they got diseases too ! FIrst we loose a valueable animal then we PAY to be able to get it off our census, hello... does this NOT make sense ? How long do we take this stuff ?

I just kinda figured out the charges I have paid for CWD testing. We have tested over 2000 head here on my farm sense 1999. With charges ranging from 300 down to 125 it seems to me I could have paid for one of my kids college education which would have been money better spent. The DNR or our critics have never given this industry credit for having the most tested animals on the planet and still act like we have no testing in this industry. All our testing has never gotten this industry one bit of credit. We need to let the public know how much we test our animals.

Forgot to tell you the Montana State has placed me at a level four so I can't sell till I'm a certified herd and a level five. Seems kinda nuts as I've been in the CWD program since 1999 and was in compliance all but one year which was last year when I had a health problem. With the CWD rules and boarders close down how long will we be able to stay in business as a real business and not just be a bunch of guys in the deer hobby business???

Jack, I asked about your increase in CWD charges at USAHA. It was discussed that your increase in charges may be due to the testing procedure change to the ELISA test. You may want to do some price checking and find a better rate at another lab, if you haven't already done so. Good luck. Rhonda

Testing fees are set at least partially by the vet who is doing the test.  If they want to get rid of you they will jack the price up.  Vets don't especially enjoy doing CWD testing.  You can save a little money by having your vet send in a bunch of tests together to reduce shipping charges.  Our vet is currently charging $75 per head plus shipping.
