Has there ever been a large die off of deer due to CWD? With all the hype about it I can't find any cases of large die offs other than depopulation by DNR agencies, even then very few tested positive.

jason e..........................You have got to be KIDDING!......................I just went to a CWD meeting put on by our MDC and it's ...............according to them the worse thing EVER!..........................even though they could NOT provide, Who or WHAT has EVER DIED from IT!

The biggest die offs in any wildlife species usually occur when you have an over educated under experienced gov't official in charge who is listening to other over educated under experienced gov't biologists who base 98% of there data on a hunter survey card and car/deer collisions. When in doubt just issue more tags, easiest way to get rid of a wildlife "problem" is to get rid of the wildlife.

My thoughts exactly, I was sure I had missed something with all the experts telling us how deadly this is and will be the end of all deer herds! A sheep in wolves clothing.

EHD is far more deadly to deer than CWD! They can document losses to EHD every year and there are usually plenty. Anthrax in Texas also gets a lot of deer, but CWD has been made the boogie man of whitetails. My guess is that it has been around a lot longer than anyone realizes but it takes a long time to kill an animal and deer, especially bucks in the wild don't live that long.

You have that right. If EHD were the focus there would be no more deer.

I like how some hunters and the jokers over on qdma that try to talk up cwd and how deer farms were and are the big problem. Today there is a post over there about ehd and nobody chimes in. They are clueless of the real world and are clueless to the real threat of their beloved whitetails. What a joke!!!

Have you all read the new federal CWD rules? Lots of pros and cons. But looks like a move in the right direction.

Our state just passed a new CWD testing ruling that states we don't have to test anything if we don't want. We still have to test if we want to move deer out of state and to keep our CWD status in our breeding herds obviously but our state vet says we have tested for 10 years w/o a positive case so he is certain it has been identified and taken care of through years of successful monitoring. This is great news for the preserves and people who are raising deer and elk just for meat. SD was the first state to implement the monitoring system which the other states now follow. I agree about EHD being a huge problem and they don't even acknowledge it because they know they can't blame it's movement on the commercial deer and elk breeders. The CWD scare was the one shot they thought they had at shutting down the captive cervid industry and with alot of hard work and organization breeders have shown that we are more serious about the care and health of our animals and the wild ones then any gov't agency and our deer are healthier then ever.
