My buck hit his antlers on something last night and screwed up one point. I cant tell if he hit it hard enough that it split open or if flys and something are in there but it looks like a circle. Just wondering if there is anything to do to prevent infection and other problems.

My breeder did the same thing about three weeks ago at the tip of his right main beam. For a day or two you could see the bright red blood, but after this it turned black and solidified over. I get to within an arms length away and can see that he most likely will not finish out the right main beam, but he has what I like to call a "hand" growing where his main beam should be going. He got a point going up, a drop tine, a kicker going in and out, and an additional drop tine. Point is, if you dont see any white fluids and all you see is hardened black or red, then you know he is ok. If you start to see the white show up, then you got either fly larvae or infection. Keep a close eye for any discoloration would be my best guess. I got this info from others because I posted about this when he first did it and that was the advice I got.

Thanks Alot, We flushed it out with Betadine and slapped some pine tar on there so hopefully he will be ok without getting any infections.
