I just found one of my 2 year old bucks dead. I am not sure what happened to him. He is still in with several other bucks and thought maybe he was gored. He does have one puncture wound on his front leg. But could not see any other signs of injuries. He must have just died this morning and is losing hair already. Anyone have any thoughts on what would have happened? Thanks.

any blood on mouth? or foamy discharge on mouth?

No, there was no blood at all. No foam around the mouth either. There is a small pond I the pen, but he was up near the barn.

Brother...i feel your pain...i lost a yrling buck 3 weeks ago....one day he was fine..the next day we noticed he didnt look right...1-1/2 hrs later he was dead. 2 weeks later i lose buck #2...a 172" 2 yr old with LOTS of promise...he lasted 24 hrs. other than panting hard he had no signs of ****..neither one did. My words of advice...IF you lose another Take him to your ag dept for an ecropsy so they can tell you what he died from. I didnt because of time and $$$ BUT i regret EVERYDAY not doing it and just guessing what they died from. I suspect EHD but have only lost the two. If you have a pond FOG FOG FOG. FOG EVERYWHERE. BE PROACTIVE bro...not reactive

EHD is among us and it takes no prisoners.

The puncture wound on his leg was aptly delivered while he showed weak during his process of death, and could have even been delivered after death.

I just lost two in sept. THE ONLY sign I had is that...... Because I still gave them a bottle once or twice a week is that they had a hard sucking the bottle. Like their tongue was in the way. They ran up to me Every Time!! Until the end. Only A DROP of blood In one nostril and a SMALL amount of foam at the mouth. After I saw that....With in 3-4 hours..... Dead.

Having them tested, my doe, which I kept both of them alive for a week. One part of the test came back, Major EHD! Still waiting on my Buck. But the vet that did the autopsy said EHD!! I hate midge flies!!!

I do have one Question, to Any one, I did notice that when I checked them at night (all during the night), when I shined the light to see their eyes the ones that were sick had a RED tint instead of the bluish or greenish tint. If you have a deer that is sick if you see that their eyes reflect red, please let me know. It is just for MY information.

I saw another doe with the red eyes. NO other signs, I had no meds. I used them on my oldest doe 16 months. I gave her (the one I saw with the red eyes) a high dose of prednisone. That I needed for me. She is still alive. I lost my buck, the BackBone of my farm.

HEART BROKEN in LA ( lower Alabama)

I am NOT....NOT....Saying BY ANY MEANS to DO THIS...... these are and were my Pets, MY BABIES!!

injected vessels/hemorrhage around the sclera and conjunctiva of the eyes was common in the ones that we had that had EHD last year. We lost a 2 yo shooter 3 weeks ago that was fine one feeding dead the next. Picked him up and 1/2-3/4 Gallon of fluid poured out of his lungs. I'm afraid even for those of us in the north that ehd could become a way of life like it is in the south. Michigan got hit soooo hard last year that there has to be a lot of carriers out there from last year, whether it be cattle or deer. Many have been hit in Indiana this year and one I know of didnt have it last year and lost 17out of 20 this year. Sometimes seems like there is no rhyme or reason why people got it or didnt get it.

We lost one of our yearling bucks back in July that showed no signs of anything, he was fine & 2 hours later we found him dead. Same thing, no blood, no swelling, no foaming, nothing. Very aggravating to say the least. At the time we were actually doctoring our other buck trying to get him over EHD.

5,000 dead cattle and there would be a vaccine before next season.....gotta have the money backing the research.
