The 3 yr old buck I posted about on 3/8/10 and 3/25/10 died a few days ago.
When he died he had severe weight loss and muscle deteriation.
I have another 3 yr old buck that is showing the same symptoms only not near as severe. One of the common denominators between these 2 deer is that they both had access to a rank mud puddle to drink from. And yes I always have fresh water for them and why deer drink out of those soup holes when they have fish bowl clean drinking water elsewhere in their pen is beyond me, yet most not some do this. This current buck was treated 3 weeks ago with 10 cc C&D antitoxin, ivomec, and draxxin. I darted him yesterday with 2 more cc of draxxin.
I plan on continuing with the darting of draxxin. My question is: how far apart should the darting of draxxin be, and is there ANYTHING at all anybody has an idea on. Again, one of the common denominators was that both of these bucks had access to the same rank mud puddle to drink from.
If this other deer dies, I want to know what from. I am in Illinois. Does anyone know who or where I can go to find out positively what a deer has died from. Our modern technology can exume a human body and determine the cause of death. Certainly someone, somewhere, can determine what a fresh dead deer died from. I am willing to drive the deer ANYWHERE in the U.S. to find out. I am sick & tired of the fecals coming up negative yet deer continue to die.
We have 94 deer, and 200 inch 2 year olds just began showing up in our pens, and I know that's not saying much in light of what is now being produced, but we're excited cause we did this w/o spending tons of money on big name genes. (although we wished we would have).
I ask why in the world does it nearly always have to be in your top 10% of your herd that you lose. Getting very weary in trying to raise quality bucks because of the aforementioned. If I had the money for the deer I lost instead of those that lived and were sold, I'd have much more money. Not looking for pity here, just an answer to why my deer die, and what I can do to prevent it. If I lose deer after that, it would be much easier to accept.
Thanks in advance for any advise or info.
