Dead Fawn with rumen full of sand.

I have had three fawns die this year that seemed completely healthy. The day before they died they seemed to not feel well. Stand-offish, droopy ears and eyes, hair on end. I necropsied each of these my self as I do with all of my dead deer. Everything seems normal except that the rumen contains an excessive amount of sand. My first thought was that the fawns were not able to reach the feed, but I have since lowered all of the feeders, so that I know that is not the case. I also have free choice minerals in every pen, as well as alfalfa hay. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before. Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

A friend of ours had a similar thing happen to a buck fawn, but the sandy material was in his urethra. He thought it was becasue of the trace minerals in the feed.

I know there is a horse product for sand and dirt eaters...It helps them pass it???

I would ask a vet about it...actually... I would call a horse vet that knows the product and have your vet talk with them???

I have never had this problem, but if so that is what I would do???

BEST OF LUCK

Sorry it has taken so long to get back on this, but test results on one of the fawns that had a rumen full of sand came back as clostridial disease. Thanks for input everyone. Hope all is well.
