Does he make the cut?

We have a Hydroax/12 Pack 3 year old that is really looking good. We are looking for some opinions. Would you use him for a breeder or sell him as a shooter? His mother has produced 5 sons well over two hundred by 3 and we have a two year old from her that is going to fall between 250" and 300" this year. All these bucks were sired by Hydroax. Its hard to tell from the pics but all his mass measurements are over 7" and his tines are mostly over 4" in diameter.

Thanks for the input.

It all depends on what your business plan is - what are you trying to accomplish in your breeding program? Is this the style you are after - is this the blood line you want to expand on or are there others out there you want to try? And a bird in the hand as they say - deer die and then you get nothing for them. What a person is going to breed to is a very personal decision based on what your goals are.

i say breed with him, if his mom is producing like that he should produce well for you. He will make you pretty shooters, he dosen't have one of those ugly racks that look like the buck is carrying a blooming onion on his head. He's super clean and has potential to produce.

Come on guys don't be shy, we really want YOUR opinions and thoughts on this!!!! Trust me, you won't be hurting any feelings if you don't think he makes the grade. That's why we asked.

Here is a little more info on this buck.

He looks like he will be a 6x6 or better depending on how long into the season he grows, and will be at least 20+ inches inside. Like Paul said, his mass is big all the way out his beams and his tines are thick. His G-2s, G-3s, and G-4s are all either splitting or have inside daggers. He reminds us allot of Hydro-Ax the way he had all the splits and daggers to go along with his big main frame.

Lets hear what your thoughts are.

I really like the frame on him, in the second pic you can see his mass if you look at the ear next to the beam it gives a real good idea.

When deciding who to breed with you have to look at all your three year olds - is he one of the best?? He has a nice typical frame and depending on who you cross him with he could produce some nice typicals for you. Some hunters like typicals, and some like the bloomin' onion. There is a hunter for every style of deer. That's what keeps them coming back to hunt whitetails again and again - every one is different.

If I am not mistaken, with 12 pack on the bottom that also means Avalanche and AGN Queen. This combined with Hydroax's reputation, and the look he already has, I would give him a chance. Just thinking out loud. Allen

All the bucks out of her are full brothers then? I would breed with the big 2 year old. Send this "smaller" brother down the road.

Allen you hit the nail on the head. This buck has two very close power does in his pedigree. Even though 12 pack might not have been the most marketable buck, he was a true brute. I remember when Sam and Brian James had his rack at one of the shows he was breathtaking. The queen is one of the best producing does of all time. Then you through in Hydroax's mother, a PA Geronimo doe. When we select our breeding's we have a tendency too focus on the does more than the sires. Wild Rivers I guess the good thing about him is he has the ability to produce both typical and non typicals. Here is his full 2 year old younger brother.

paul i have plenty of room for both. i still like the two year old but next year they could switch places. Both monsters.

That's the thing about whitetails - typicals don't always produce typicals. Our buck Ballistic is out of HyJax, who was fairly typical, and a Redoy Ruger doe out of a Stretch doe - pretty typical there too. You just never know. Even though Ballistic has a gazillion points they are mostly straight up - kind of like a triple or quadruple typical all on one head. Will be interesting to see what we get out of him for offspring. So far he hasn't had any trouble carrying his antlers, I think because they are mostly up and balanced.

I guess that is why we all breed whitetails - you just never know what you are going to get.

I would go with the 2 yr old. I'd like to see little wider spread on him, but that is what I like. And maybe he is wider then I can tell, still a good buck.

We are not really trying to decide between the two. We are trying to decide the 3 year olds fate.

If I am not mistaken AGN Jackie is the anchor doe to this buck? We have 5 bucks and numerous daughters and granddaughters out of her. And all have been great producers for us. She is still standing on the farm (9yrs old). Picture is O-35 a 3 year old out of Jackie 230". I hope this helps to show the proven blood that is flowing on your farm.

Owen, I agree with you. Mike Nedry grows some of the biggest deer every year. He might have grow more 300" bucks than anybody. I believe 12 Pack and his womb brother Bam Bam might still be the two largest brothers to date. Either way the Queen Alexandria doe line produces.

Thanks for the opinions guys, you make some good points. Anybody else want to chime in on this?
