How do you get the semen from a dead buck ? more pacificly just his genitals . Have a buddy that works at a deer ranch and he said they sent a set off to have semen extracted from them . Just wondered how its done . Is that something that can be done by a farmer or something done in a lab .

Jamie,

Call Nate at our Apple Creeks office 920-855-6713. If you would like to come and visit we can show the process on bucks we are still hunting. We collect on our own bucks and process semen on site. Just few months back a local deer farms 240" yearling broke both front legs and we were able to secure 17 straws. The most we received from a dead buck this year was 50 straws. If any one else would be interested to join you they are welcome.

Happy New Year

jamie contack ( pet man jack ) on here hes been doing it for a long time, and is supper nice, let me know if your going to go to apple creek ?:)

One of my favorite elk got killed five years ago in August. He had been dead overnite and was bloated and did smell. He had died in the creek and his testicles were in the water. I cut the testicles off and home I went. I recovered 77 1/2cc straws from him. He was a 460 SCI four year old bull. In 2009 I AI'd twenty cows and had 15 calves from him in 2010 so it was worth it to me. This is the reason this is done. A person may be able to recover something from a death loss.

Now that is a pretty sweet deal Jack! I would have given myself a pat on the back. How is everything out West?

Johnny B,

We have been in a chinook zone for a few weeks now which means we are at 50 degrees so all the snow is melting. Life is good. Had some great desert bighorn collections. Found a 260 non-typical mule deer that I like very well.

How did all your AI's work for you this year?? Say hi to Pete.

After the chinook zone do you go back to deep freeze? Is the warm weather your getting from El Ninio? I am glad to hear about the bighorn collections, that is certainly exciting. a 260 mule deer is one heck of a big animal. Did you get a picture of the 260 mule deer? All the AI seems to be going good so far. Down in Northern AL where I was breeding the week of Thanksgiving everything looks real good. Certainly we will not know till those little fawns start hitting the ground, but out of 68 does only 6-9 of those does have been shown any interest by the backup bucks. Several of the pens have had the backup buck paying no attention at all to the does. I am quite hopeful for that group. Down at Elton's according to him things are looking really good. Only a little bit of activity the first day or two out of 96 animals. We shall keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best come May-June. Next time I talk to Pete I will say hello for you. Take care!
