Its about time that I attempt to build a handling facility and start directing my pen layout to the future facility. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on pen layout/handling facility layout or any regrets on how you wish you would have done something. Pictures would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for the posts, comments and advice.

Very interested in this myself. I'm getting ready to start a alleyway from my pens and build a handling facility. We like to do it the right way from the start.

I have a sliding gate that comes the last 100' of my alleyway. A slider in my last box stall that slide up to the first box of my Tunnel System. It also slides backwards to the alleyway to "push" a deer out of the box stall and one in my alleyway in my barn that pushes right up to the back of any trailer!

These Slider gates keep you out of site of the deer,The slight noise they make helps pushes the deer along and serve to keep me out of harms way when I Live Load my Stockers into trailer and while moving them around inside my barn...............Since my boys have grown up and aren't always available to help!

You may want to check out the Deerfarmer Library in the Production Section. There are 4 articles on handling whitetails that may give you some good ideas.

Does anyone have any details on how they live load? that would be interesting to see here also.

Pictures or diagrams would be helpful.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, Just thought this was a closely related topic and might keep this discussion going.

Thanks,

Hi Russ,

How to I get into the library? I have tried "pushing all of the buttons"?

Remi,

Click on the Deerfarmer Tab at the top of the page to get to the main Deerfarmer.org website. Then Click on the Library or Articles menu tab to take you to a list of all our library articles.

Lot to read there. Enjoy.

On most browser, there should be a line of tabs starting with Classifieds, and ending with Deerfarmer.

If you don't see it, then simply go to http://www.deerfarmer.org and go to Library.

We  built a live load door in our handling facility. close a few doors...open a few doors and bam....can live load through the barn. you can NOT HAVE TOO MANY DOORS!!! We have ours made so that it only takes TWO of us to run deer. Many folk have good intentions but when it comes time to do something you better be set up so you don't need help!!! After a few times through the deer can about do it themselves lol...Funny but true. We have ropes and pulles on all our doors so we can close doors with out running through the barn. My best advice is to plan it out...draw it out...run through it in your mind...again..and again...and again. Everyone's circumstance is unique. we are fairly new to farming BUT the one thing we are VERY PROUD of is our handling facility. Easy in...easy out.

Jeremy you can come look at my handling facility if you want to just give me a call .

One of the best suggestions I have on this is to go see several facilities that other people have built and ask them one thing they wouldnt have done and one thing they wish they would have done. Then take everything youve seen and build it the best you can.
