fencing advice

At $3.50 a 12ft post and lasting 15 plus years i will stick with cedar posts. Lots of them to be had in this state and with new pens going up every year it does not break the bank!

Where in Alabama can you find round treated post? or good prices on galvanized or pipe?

The round post can be ordered at most feed stores. The oil field pipe can be found at oil field service companies but they don't usually advertise. You have to call around in your area.

Here is a pic how I did my bracing, useing telephone poles with 5"x10' treated round post for the diangle braces, both concreted pole at least 4' down and brace 2'. Filled only 3/4 full with concrete and the rest with dirt then you should not have problems with rotting at top of concrete.

We have been doing the concreted diangle braces for years on higher end horse farms where H-braces with wire on was not a option but this was the 1st time I built deer fence with these braces, a yr and half ago I put my first 2 pens up and they moved very little. I was first just going to concrete the corner and end poles without the braces but we were pulling the ends a little when stretching the wire so decided to do the diangle!

We use most steel posts except corners and the ones right next to them. Ours have been up for many years with no issues of rusting and we don't have caps on them. Good fence is essential and I recommend Stay-Tuff fence which I have been selling for 7 years now, it seems to be the better fence out of all that is out there in my opinion but to each their own. We use the post clips from Stay-Tuff to secure the fence to the metal poles, makes it so fast and simple. Call me if you have any questions or want to purchase supplies.

I will agree with Henry.  I have used mostly Beakert and Stay Tuff.  I have been pleased with both.  But, I used one roll of off the wall sh##t wire in a 5 acre pen and it makes the whole pen look bad.  Good wire is much easier to put up because it will stand up and works much better for me.

I've had fence up for 30 plus years.  Loved the look of wood but now most treated wood is rotten even here in Montana where it is dry.  I did change to field pipe many years ago and wish I had everything in pipe now.  When I replace a post I use pipe.  My opinion is pipe is the only way to go.  I've had pipe in ponds for thirty years and when I pulled so up this year they were still very usable.

Gate for animal movement should be in corners for easier animal movement.

I cant hardly force a deer through a gate if it is not in the corner.  my deer dont like to go through openings in the fence unless i dont want them too!!!

Hi Guys,

The used oil field pipe obviously has plenty of oil and grease on it. In your opinions do you think this will be a problem in the state inspectors eyes. Here in Wonderful NY, As you all know we have to have pens inspected before we can get our deer. I found a guy near Olean, NY that has used oil field pipe available.  If interested let me know, I have name and number. Thanks Speeny

Should be good if you have a way to fasten the fence to the poles... I have seen deer fence that I can not believe people are still in business... Do not use 4x4 as poles or cross braces build it right use round post...

Anybody have any contacts for steel fence post or oil field pipe in Pa.  ????

Thanks Brad

Doing the fencing I did myself with good wood post and green T-posts didn't save me more than a couple thousand dollars compared to the fence I had built using 5" Galvanized posts for Braces and every 140' or mid section and galvanized T-posts and the fencing I had hired done looks so much better I'm rebuilding most of what I did myself.  I know prices are going up but last year when I did mine I paid $250 for H braces, $500 for gates and $4 a running foot no additional charges so it was very easy to figure up what it was going to cost ahead of time.  I gave the guy a drawing and hung out a few days while he set the posts for the corners... Of course the guy I used was supposed to come back in August and is a year behind on work now so the good fence builders that charge reasonable prices are extremely busy and few and far in between but if you can wait it is the way to go.  You or one of your helpers gets hurt you've negated all your savings doing it yourself right there.  Only problems I see with oil field pipe is that it will not be new and thus will not look as good and if it was used in a H2S environment it's going to corrode in just a couple years so be careful what you buy.
