I am at my wits end!!! I have been battling with coccidia in my fawns ever since i started in 2007....i was always told give them albon ...give them albon...well i gave them albon and have lost more fawns than I would like to say all to coccidia.....now am finding out that they say they don't think albon works for the coccidia up here in PA ......different strain I guess .......anyhow, I hear that Baytril works for this is this true??? I spoke with Robbie and she has been a great help!! I am trying to get the baytril to no avail....my vet says it is illegal to give to deer because they are a food producing animal!! So he won't sell it to me. (thats it for this vet....anyhow, This makes no sense....what the heck are cows then???? They use the stuff in cattle and swine...last i checked we eat them!! I don't want to lose any more fawns and i am at my wits end.....please someone give me some ideas........i was also told about something called "marqee"(spelling?)...but i heard it is awful expensive..........I am so frustrated!!!:mad::mad:

Sulmet.... I think I have some Dennis Call me... I will look!! (724)735-9924

Also Bovatec...If your vet cultured it and knows you deer have it or buy Agri-King formula Mix a VERY small amount with your redcap for a few days.

Dennis-

If you recall, I had quite a time with this last year. I'm sure you reread all the posts, but here's one of them for you to review.

I wish you luck....we are praying here that we will not see what we did last year. We started our does on Bovatec this spring and have done a maintenance with the water for 21 days. Will do again here in about 2 weeks. Feeding ADM milk replacer which has the Deccox in it, so will hope that it keeps the levels down in my bottle feds this year. We have an eagle eye out for it this year. Hope that our preventative methods pay off this summer.

What you have to remember is that you can't kill coccidia...you have to keep the levels of the protozoa (sp?) down to a managable level to where they can't take advantage of a stressed or sick animal.

It was a hard lesson to learn last year!!

Thank u everyone for your input......Billie Jo i have been getting slammed with calls and apologize for not be calling........now my cell phone just died and i have to put on the charger.........again thank you everyone who has called and written....I really appreciate it.......It looks like I am going to need to be more proactive with my herd regarding the coccidia........I just need to get my fawns back on track right now..........

Dennis my choice and has always been since i started !!! Smz`s !! I`ve wrote this in many post on the old forums !! This is the only drug that will treat ecoil and coccidia that i know of !! You have to have a script to get it from your vet !! It works !!!

Mitch,

I was trying to remember what you told me......I kept thinking you said ringers.....what are smz's and how much do you give and for how long? I am going to try to call you tomorrow.......thanks!!

Albon, SMZ, Sulfa-dimethox, sulfamex, and so on..... all are sulfa based broad spec antibiotics, just in different specific formulations. Marquis is ponazuril, which does treat EPM in horses, but is also a good cocci med, it is just very expensive.

Robbie,

I have the sufa dimethox.......I have corrid.........What do you think is my best option? What would you do in my shoes........as we talked you kn ow the albon does not work for me.........do you think since the albon did not work none of these other sulfa based meds will?

Albon is the brand name for the oral suspension of sulfa dimethoxine. That is what I was saying, they are all very similar, and if Albon isn't working for you, likely none of the sulfa based formulas will. Check with a vet (a new one, I am guessing ) and see if there is a different compound of sulfa with something else in it that might give you the edge based on the cocci in your area.

Here is a little info about coccidia in dogs:

The drugs prescribed by a vet would be either Albon or Bactrovet or other drugs from the sulfadimethoxine class of drugs. Other effective drugs for coccidia treatment are: Tribrissen, which is a sulfadiazine and Corid. These drugs will not kill the parasites, but will stop them from reproducing and in time the dog's body will build up the immunity to eliminate the parasites.

Decox will Take care of coccidia. Have the stool samples come back positive for Coccidia?

Dennis, I hate to hear anybody having problems like this. I hope you get it figured out.

Thanks so much Jerry.......the fawns are the ones that are having to deal with the most....I just hate watching them in their struggles.........I WILL see that this is never a problem again in the future I can assure you of that...........I will be sure to do the preventative measures with my herd so muy fawns are ahead of this darn coccidia when they are born next year.......I have had so many calls and messges that have been so helpful and i am grateful to each and everyone of you who have reached out to help.......this truly is an industry full of great people for the most part.......it is times like these that is when the true kind people reach out to help!! Thanks again everyone and I'm hoping we caught this in time to get all these guys turned around!!!
