But after reading some threads about shooter bucks and the demand for them, and venison not being a good business. The only real thing I can figure is bragging rights to big bucks is the only reason to get into deer farming? What am I missing?

Don't get me wrong, I love deer and want to get into breeding them. I would do it even if there wasn't money to be made somehow.

That could open up a new can of worms. As long as you love what your doing and whatever you do dont put the life savings in deer. There are some making good money, some making a little and some making none!!! Just like anything else you need money to make money and if you wanna play with the big boys and big name deer its gunna cost ya.I say raise some deer, enjoy your deer and if you can sell enough to pay the feed bill you are doin something you love and not going to far in the hole.

you are in a closed state.. your market should be good. thats why i keep saying a closed states market doesn't fluxuate like it does up north.. our markets are not flooded.you will be fine and the shooter market should stay strong

Well, I am definately gonna start, no matter if it costs me money or not. Thanks for the replies...:)

It will definetly costs you some money! You may or may not get it back but the upfront cost is pretty high. I am not trying to discourage you. I love it! Just be sure you know how much your start up cost are going to be. If you plan to get your money back you need a good breeder or the equipment for AIing. Just do your homework.

If you are in Texas you definitely will want the capability to AI since you won't be able to bring in genetics from the rest of the country. Unfortunately for you, the market in Texas is somewhat artificial since it has closed borders. That means producers can charge what they want and you don't have the option to go anywhere else.

You can start with some good does - they don't have to be the most expensive, just something from a recognizable bloodline - and then you can buy very good semen at a reasonable price to continually improve your stock until you get where you want to be. Have a plan and stick with it!

For me it is kinda simple " You get out of it what you put into it" and im not talking money. You don't have to spend millions to act like a million. You can be small and still act big. IF you put pride in your animals, you will get pride back. If you put your time into building new relationships, your new friends will bless you with there time in return. IF you get fired up about your herd, it will spread to others. And if you include your family in your passion and your possibility's will be endless.

Deer farming has never been about the money with me. The wife on the other hand that is a different story! LOL I haven't made any money since i started. Everything i sold has gone right back into the kitty. But i look at deer farming as more then what it has taken from me but to what it has given me and my family. So start small, go slow, and make it what you want it to be. Good luck and have fun

If you are smart you will make money. The problem with deer farmers is, we are all an independent bunch of people and we don't heed good advice when we start. (myself included) We all are so much smarter than the guys that have been doing it forever. If you are not rich then heres the best advice anyone will ever give you. Don't buy over priced deer but buy good ones. Raise shooters that will get big by the time they are 3 years old and sell them. You will make money. ----Richie--- You have spent to much time with Will. The prices of deer in Texas are not as good as they are in Oklahoma and run about the same as the North. Just as in Alabamas case it won't take very long to figure out that no state is self sustaining. The theory sounds good but doesn't actually work in the end. I still love all you guys in Alabama because if the south wuda won we wouldn't have to put up with so much BS from the government. Well except in deer farming.

If you want to know what a Shooter is saleing for in a closed state.. I put 10 on Whitetail Exchange and got offered 250.00 each . Tim is right no state is self sustaining.

A 130" shooter here in Alabama brings the farmer 2100.00 each.. all day long and as many as you have. I'll buy as many 125"+ shooters that I can get. I currently am looking for 50+ shooters.

I don't have a website. Jason I'll call you tonight and we will talk. I need to know more about b.a.m. Too

If you have shooter in Michigan I know someone who will buy every one you have at a fair price. 269-217-9473. He has posted on here, bought a banner on Whitetail Exchange, range peoples phone off the hook, traveled to farms etc. He is paying what everyone else is or more. Michigan is closed border and shooters are in DEMAND.
