Wow, a long, cold, tough winter has finally past. I feel like I cut more firewood this winter than the previous two combine. It felt good to tear the saws apart this week, give them a good cleaning, then put them away until September. I took advantage of not having to go into work, and was took a walk on this gorgeous spring morning. I was out the door at 6 am, listening to all the species of birds singing. It truley is the best music, better than any music a man can make. It was wonderful to walk along talking to and praying to our creator, it's so easy to take our days and our health for granted. I walked past the deer pens, and seeing my plump does reminded me that fawns will be here shortly, and that I better start preparing, lol.

Our turkey season starts tomorrow at daybreak, I am not hunting, but I will be out guiding a friend on our property. While out looking for fresh turkey sign, I stumbled on some fresh mushrooms. These are morell mushrooms, really tasty.

Looks like it will start raining soon, so I am glad I got a nice walk in. I look forward to watching another sunrise in the woods tomorrow morning, if we are blessed with a turkey harvest, I will be sure to post some pictures tomorrow.

Our calves were a few weeks ahead of the fawns this year. The cows are all done calving, we got 5 great looking, healthy calves.

Ryan, Old decaying cherry trees and/or cherry tree stumps thickly tangled with wild grape vines is where I have been having luck. We have two locations like that on our 160 acre property. The trees were timbered 22 years ago, the stumps are all but gone, but some years I find a couple dozen there, some years I find a couple hundred. Five years ago my family and I found over 2000! They are so sensitive to the weather, I think thats why It fluctuates so much. I also have found them under live, healthy poplar trees and apple trees on our ground too. I have also just stumbled across them in the wide open forest under middle age oaks, They are one of natures truley awesome mysteries. Fun to look for them while out on walk, it's almost as much fun as finding a shed from a wild buck.

My buddy did get a turkey this morning. Nice size body, 5 inch beard. But I failed to keep my promise, I didn't take a picture and post it on here. I was happy for him anyways.

If I could post pictures my son (13) and I went out turkey hunting this morning and he shot a tom.

It was both our first time turkey hunting.

I picked up a couple calls the other day used a buddies decoy and went.

Must have sounded something like a turkey. He came right in gobbling and strutting.

Was pretty cool.

10" beard and 1 5/16 spurs

WE HAD A GREAT TIME.

That's awesome !! You are hooked now.....

Congrats to you and your son, I know some guys that have hunted them for years and still never killed one. Sometimes it seems like turkey hunting is the easiest thing in the world, then sometimes those birds will really puzzle you and seem to be unkillable. It all depends on the mood of the turkey that day.

We had a great looking calf born this morning, she is unique. 4 down, 1 to go. Then it's on to fawns.
