Hi,
My family is interested in starting a reindeer farm. Please allow us to introduce ourselves.
My name is Jonathan Hayes. I am 35 years old. My wife, Amanda, and I have been married 13 years and have 5 children, all under the age of 10. I have a BS in Wildlife Biology and own a 20 acre farm. Our nearest neighbor is a mile away.
We live in northernmost Maine where woodland caribou were indigenous until they extirpated by over hunting and habitat deforestation in the early part of last century. I feel certain, therefore, that ours would be a comfortable climate for a heard of reindeer.
I owned and operated a dogsled kennel of rare sled dogs for over decade and competed in many races. I mention this only to point out that we are used to training draught animals and tending to an extended animal family (including breeding dynamics). Our land is apr. 15 acres of field and 5+ acres of cedar stand with a stream as our back boundary.
We have so many questions and have been doing a lot or on line research over the past 2 years.
My first question for this forum is:
Has the embargo on the importation of Cervids to Maine been lifted?
We look forward to being educated on this venture. Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge.
Your servant,
Jonathan
