does anyone know if it is possible to insure single deer in your herd,I am making a pricey purchase on a breeder buck and i wont do it without insurance, or is there a company that will insure a herd REASONABLY, and if so where can you get insurance from. I am not having any luck finding info on this matter so i thought i would check in here. Thanks

Insuance can be found in several areas. There are several providers that sell "farm" insurance at reasonable costs. I am an insurance agent, but currently don't provide "farm coverage". However, I do have my insurance through Farm Family. They are very reasonable and provide complete coverage for my house, farm, buildings and livestock. They can provide per animal coverage or blanket coverage. This means you can have a set amount value per head or have a broad coverage amount that covers the entire herd. ( This covers the lower valued animals and the higher value animals under the same protection) I keep a $50,000 blanket on my livestock. this covers them no mater what each individual animal is valued.

Companies that I know provide farm coverage here in WV include Farm Family and Farmers and Mechanics. Many of your bigger insurance companies like State farm, Nationwide, Allstate etc. don't provide farm coverage. you will need to go to a specialty provider. I defintely urge you to contact a local INDEPENDENT insurance agent and ask them about farm coverage.

You may have different providers in your state or even local providers that only write in your state. I would also ask your state deer farming association if they are knowledgeable about this information. Also ask any local cattle farmers or your local extension agent. They all go through the same providers that we are seeking.

I hope this helps. Good Luck !!

Sent you an e-mail that we received a couple of weeks ago about a farm insurance co. They say they cover accidental deaths also. You could check them out. We use Farm Family also and they have done good by us so far.

I found insurance from a company listed through the breeders co-op. The agent got the insurance from a company in England. They sent me a copy of the policy. I read through it and it all sounded good. I insured a blanket and then 4 deer separately. Well, I got a copy of the policy directly from the provider and it was not even remotely the same as the policy they faxed me. It only covered acts of God. Lightning, tornado, etc I called and cancelled immediately.

There is one NADFA endorses. Don't know much about it, out of Clinton, Missouri.

Just got a email frm NADFA with them on it

(40,40,40); If you are looking to insure a high-dollar animal, Archangel Specialty is an insurance company that has developed a new product for breeders of whitetail deer, elk, and other cervid species.  Our policies cover the animal if it dies as a result of disease (pneumonia, gastrointestinal, cancer, etc.), parasite, bacterial infection, anesthesia, accidental trauma, or if it is stolen.  Here is a link to an overview of the program:  http://archangelspecialty.com/programs/wildlife-breeders/  Note: we do exclude coverage for "government slaughter diseases" and malicious injury

(40,40,40); Last week we launched this new product in the State of Wisconsin.  We will be rolling it out in Texas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Ohio over the course of the next month.  If successful, we will expand into additional states.

(40,40,40); We created this new product because our underwriter, while with her previous company, had received a lot of feedback from breeders such as yourself that felt that the marketplace was not offering adequate coverage for common causes of death.  After a thorough research process, we believe we have developed the right policy and pricing that will allow us to serve the deer breeding industry for years to come.  If you would like to learn about the coverage we offer, our toll free number is 1-800-575-9628.  If you ask for information on the "Wildlife Breeders" program you will be transferred to our underwriter.  I would also be more than happy to answer your questions on this forum.
