Large eight pointers

Randy is correct. A 4x4 mainframe gets 8 total mass measurements. The H-4 measurement each side is taken by measuring from the tip of the beam back  to the g-3 tine and exactly half way the measurement is taken. Johnathan I hope you have not been giving away any inches :D

Randy and Josh thanks for the refresher info I had forgotten SCI does always give you 4 on each side. I think you just repeat the 3rd measurement on racks that don't have a T-4. I probably have shorted my self a time or two. I have always scored my typical bucks when they were sold to the preserve by gross BC score. It probably made the preserves happy. Lol

Bell either way SCI or BC all bucks get 4 mass measurements on each side if you have not been giving the credit to your bucks you have been giving away inches. Here is a quote from BCs FAQ page.

DO ELK AND DEER ALWAYS GET FOUR CIRCUMFERENCE MEASUREMENTS? WHAT ABOUT EIGHT-POINTERS? WHAT ABOUT TWELVE-POINTERS? Yes, elk and deer trophies ALWAYS get four circumferences. In the case of an eight-point whitetail, the G-4 is missing. Instead of looking for the smallest location between the G-3 and the G-4, the measurement is taken at the halfway point between the G-3 and the tip of the main beam. Similarly, on a mule deer with no G-3, the H-3 circumference measurement would be taken at a point halfway between where the G-2 measurement begins and the end of the G-2. For deer and elk, no matter how many normal points it has, four circumferences per side will always be the exact number of circumference measurements. UNDERSTANDING SPREAD CREDIT

Using SCI or gross BC a fairly clean bucks gross score will be the same no matter witch scoring method you use. The only time you run into big differences is when a buck has palmation and or webbing. Also if you have double tines.

Thanks again Randy,

It seems I was taught the wrong info about 25 years ago. I have shorted every eight pointer that I have ever shot or sold. Definitely today was a good day for me to learn on Deer Forum. I just got home from work and did some more reading on the subject as well. I've been ignorant. Deer forum is a great mega-phone for the truth! Lol

New picture of our 8 pointer @ 2, Do you think next year he will still only have 8 points?

Mike he is a nice one for sure. It looks like he will be a 9 or 10 next year because he has just a little bump on the end of his left antler. However you never really know, some times they will hold the basic 4x4 or 5x5 frame. I would love to see what yours looks like next year if he stayed 4x4, he would be a complete giant. He already has good mass, if he stays a 4x4 and improves his brows and width a little he would be a very special deer next fall.

Simonson, I love the look your 8 point is carrying. I agree with your statement when you said you don't try and raise 8 pointers intentionally. I do not either. I try for a 5x5 frame with extras. But if I were to get an 8 point I wouldn't mind it looking like some of these bucks on this thread.

Mike what's his pedigree he's got a very nice frame single brows not much more to ask for from a beautiful typical buck!

Ezra, Not much documentation on this bucks pedigree. His sire is Y54 (Splinter) and his dam is B14, attached all we have for their pedigrees. Certainly not the biggest rack in my pen but really catches my eye, and one of my favorites to watch grow.  Have you ever seen a longer tail on a deer ?

I like this 2 year old 8 pointer.  He has developed a small bump for a g4 on his left beam, but still an 8 this year.  He is a Harley son.
