Hello Everyone:

I decided to move my breeder bucks out of their respective breeding pens and will be holding them in their own pen. I figure this will allow them to be more relaxed and away from the activity involved with fawning etc. I also thought it would put them in a more natural mindset of being with other bucks outside of the breeding season, like they do in the wild. The only problem I can see is the stress of changing their enviornment while they are growing. Does anyonelse do this? Any thoughts one way or the other?

Thanks

Are they still at your same farm? Were they darted? Have they ever been with each other before? What are the ages of the different breeders? The problem would arise if they have never had contact with each other they would have to set up their pecking order, and this might stress them. Also darting and a new farm would possible be stressful.

All three were born and raised together in the same pen. Once weened, they were moved to another pen where they remained with eachother until last October when we drew semen and put them into their individual breeding pens. All are the same age. They are only being moved to another pen on my farm. They will not be darted, I have a series of runways in which to move them. As far as the pecking order goes, I don't know if they will have that same order.

The reason I want to do this is to better isolate these bucks so as to eliminate the hustle and bustle of fawning and to ensure that they have every opportunity to grow like they did the year before.

I would think that they should be fine. With everything considered I would think that they should adapt pretty easy. Just watch them for a couple days to see if one is bullying the others, and if he his put him back with the doe.

It sounds like you did everything just right. They should do real good for you.
