I have a pure southern buck fawn that is almost black. I am not sure how this happened. Could this be an accident like an albino? He is a result of live breeding and I had 16 fawns born but he is the only one colored this way.

Pictures are coming. My son will take them this weekend and I will post them. The doe was raised here and this is her first fawn. She is black in the face but the fawn is black except for some white on the belly. I don't know exactly what mellanistic means but the deer is mostly black. What is the chance his offspring will be this way?

If he is black and you draw semen put me on the list for some.

Melanism is basically the opposite of albinism. Albinos are due to the lack of dark pigment, while melanistic animals have excess pigment.

Brett,

If you have a melanistic deer you have what many in the industry are looking for.......you could have yourself a gold mine.....but before you get excited......need to determine if it is a melanistic......I hope in fact for your sake it is......good luck!!

Brett does your deer look like this one ?

I would like to be second in line for semen. Even if he is only half., Wouldn't the chances down the line (hopefully not far) he would throw a black?

I`ll be anxious to see what he looks like when he sheds out this summer Brett . Keep me posted on how he changes .
