Has anyone every used the M. Bovis vaccine, which is used to prevent respiratory disease?

Here is the reason why I am asking. Over the last few weeks, I have lost a couple deer. I had a necropsy done and supposedly they had this Mycoplasma Bovis, which is a strain of pneumonia found mostly in cattle. I have no idea how they caught this but draxxin and penicillin had no effect.

The vet thinks that I should use this vaccine on all the other deer. He said that they could possible go into shock because this vaccine for cattle. So, I would appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions.

What ages are we talking about? Did they present any other signs/symptoms prior to death? I ask these before I can give an opinion- Jason

A couple fawns in October, 2 1/2 year old doe in November, and a 2 1/2 year old doe last week. The fawns had rapid respiratory rates. The doe showed no signs other than the usual depression of a sick deer.

No coughing or nasal discharge? Its said that most animals with chronic pneumonia have mycoplasma bovis . This vaccine is used in the aid of prevention not treatment. Also at 45 days of age in calves. I personally like using the intranasal vaccine at birth. Then you could follow up with this one at 45 days. I use Vista Once SQ because it is a. modified live vaccine and it doesn't require a booster. DuraPen (Long lasting Penicillin )will help sometimes when other drugs fail. My pens sit on old cattle pasture, I have to implement a vaccination schedule. I've seen amazing health transformation from it. Please take this as merely advice, as I am not a vet. With that said every deer I've ever taken to one has died! You will learn more from fellow farmers than any veterinarian. Hope this helps-Jason

We use this vaccine on our show goats. Although we have never had a problem, we never administer it without an epi syringe on hand.

Jeremiah,

Looks like Vista Once shouldn't be used on PG animals. But MPB shots could be done now for mycoplasma bovis so might work for you.

Thank you guys for the help! Unfortunately, I found out that the penicillin I was using was the short term. I think my losses could have possibly been prevented.

What do you guys think I should do? Should I look more into the vaccines? I could test the MPB vaccine on a couple older does. I do have epi in case they go into shock. Or do you think I should just stay away from the vaccines and just be more aggressive with the antibiotics?

Jeremiah,

It would be my opinion now that you have an identified disease (mycoplasma bovis ) I think I would try the vaccine on a few does. If they have no negative responce I would use the vaccine on all my deer. I'd rather avoid disease and not try to treat my best animal if it got sick as you have had bad luck curing any. Guess I'd try something else and hope it worked. The good news is most of these cattle vaccines will work on deer in my opinion and it's just that they have not been tested for deer.

I will be giving my deer the M. Bovis vaccine next week. I just have one issue that I am facing. Unfortunately, some of the deer will have to be sedated in order to give the vaccine SQ. The instructions for the vaccine says to give it SQ. Do you think it would be ok if I gave the vaccine IM? Wouldn't it just be absorbed faster?

I have used vaccine which was SQ reccomended with darts with 1/2 inch needles and it seemed to work just fine. I just ground them down on the grinder stone.

Jack thanks for the reply.

I have another question...has anyone ever put the ivomec pour-on in their feed? I know I have read some threads about this subject before, but I just want to make sure it is safe for them. The instruction say not to give orally. I bought a large bottle of it at TSC because it was marked down.

I have used pour-on for feed, I used 2x the recommended dosage on feed I felt would be consumed within 24 hours. Worked pretty good.
