I am in Alabama and can't find good prices on 4 to 5 inch treated posts 12 feet long. Most around here are 8 foot. Many of the Co-op's around here can order them but you have to pay a high price and wait till they have a truck load to order them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Becareful buying treated posts. I won't pretend to know anything about this stuff I can only talk about what I over heard someone else say. Not all treated posts are the same. There are different grades of treatment. I think he used an example that the kind of treated wood you use on a deck won't last long if put in the ground.

Standard 4x4 and 6x6's that are purchased at your local hardware store are NOT centerspun posts. When they cut them they get as many out of one tree as they can. These poles will break. Again these poles will break. Pipe is an excellent idea. Also if you are buying Fence posts try to stick with southern yellow pine, they are by far the best post on the market. Price should run around 13-16 dollars per pole for 12 footers.

also I used all galvinized pipe on mine. Each pipe around 40$. I can get u drill stem , tpost, wire. I'll give you his number and you can call. I'm not trying to sell you something to make money. Just trying to help you out

The best post are southern yellow pine that grew in a crawfish flat. Many of these are trees that are 30-50 years old. They grow very slow due to poor soil but what you get is a post that is pure heart pine with tightly wrapped rings. The trees are plentiful but I had to treat them myself. Most of what is in the market is not from nearly as old of trees. If I could sell them by the truck load I would cut and treat them myself. They don't have much value for anything else. Pipe and TPost are definetely easier.

Thanks everyone, I actually called a friend that works at my local phone company and they sell their used poles for pretty cheap. He has a pile of them and they all look good. I plan to put 15 footers (7 to 8 inches diameter) on my corners 5 feet in the ground with concrete. Will this be strong enough to pull 450ft or less? I could put another pole as a brace on a 45 degree angle in concrete as well. Has anyone ever done this with telephone poles?
poles in concrete will rot off if the whole post in the ground is incased in concrete, removal and replacement is not fun , the question is why concrete???? if you drive the posts even 5-6 feet down unless you use a corner doubler with a top brace and a guy wire with a tensioner the fence will loosen.
OK, what about pea gravel and dirt. The guy at the phone company said these poles will out last me. Question.. How do you drive a 8 inch pole in the ground? Does someone know of equiptment I could rent. I was going to rent a Bobcat to do all my holes in the same day.
I have access here in canada to a pounder that is hydralic /cable driven by a 100 HP tractor it has a 2700 lb weight that can drive a 10 inch flat bottom post 4 feet down in about 2 min, 3 1/2 drill stem in about 30 seconds, post can be as long as 17 feet and the pounder has five axis hydralic controls to plumb , level and align the pounder where ever you need a post

You drive them with a post pounder. King Hitter has a good one. I use mine to drive metal or wood post. You will probably find it cheaper to hire someone to put the fence up for you. By the time you buy all the tools and equipment you could have more than paid for the fence.
Were are you located I used telephone poles. I used bob cat with a post hole digger then tamped excess dirt back in around post. For my corners i spaced two poles ten feet apart then ran a diagnal from top of corner two bottom of post that was ten feet away.Good luck trying to pound a telephone pole in unless you have some really soft ground with no rock.
Virgil, did you cut your 45 degree pole on a angle to match other two poles flush? How did you fasten the two together?
