At 8:30pm yesterday I found my baby fawn with a broken leg and a gash on his side. I don't know how he did it. His leg bone is broken near the ankle joint, and was sticking out of his skin with only some skin holding the rest of the leg on. My mom and I figured there was no hope for him, that he is like a horse and when they break a leg, there isn't much you can do for them. Instead of calling my dad over to put him out of his misery, my mom decided that the better plan would be to give him a Valium(for pain) and overdose him on sleep medication, so that he would peacefully slip into sleep but won't wake up. Well, I found out that a deer can survive a broken leg. It's been four hours and he's still alert and can stand, but his breathing stops on occasion if he lays down.

I've cared for the broken leg the best I could(Disinfecting, antibiotics, using gauze and a make-shift metal splint, then put a ice pack on it to decrease the swelling.), but I need to know how to flush out his system. I also have no luck with having him keep his bones in places, he keeps shaking his legs so much that it gets knocked back out of place. He is going to a wildlife rescue as soon as they open, but there is no point in doing that if he'll die from the medications. Please help.

Edit: The medication is called Zolpidem with 5 mg per tablet. I believe he was given 10 of these, and I don't know how high the mg is in the Valium he got.

The med you gave is ambien, no Valium in it. Romazicon may work as a reverser but not likely, if you can give IV fluids and keep him breathing he may make it. His leg just needs banded and it would probably be ok.

He got a separate pill for the Valium, which was to help calm him and reduce pain. He's still doing okay, but the bloodloss from his thrashing around is taking a toll on him. As for his leg, there isn't much hope for it, it's only hanging by the skin, all the muscles and tendons are cut.

Call me! In my experience fawns heal quickly to broken legs. Had a bottle fed two years ago with a compound fracture that I put a makeshift cast on. I had to knock her down a few times to clean and recast, she healed 100%. Don't kill it. If you are not comfortable doing the work, then get it to a vet.
