Need Urgent Help - 5 wk old fawn quit eating

Once again need to ask everyone here for emergency advice.

We have a 5 1/2 week old bottle-fed that has been doing very well, and has been a VERY aggressive eater. Really just obsessed. Last night he was totally normal, drank, ate some leaves. This morning he kind of quit eating the last two ounces, just playing with the nipple. He probably would have drank it, but I didn't want him to overeat so I took it away. At mid-day feeding he drank, but stopped every 3-4 ounces. He acted hungry, so I let him have all but 1.5 ounce of his regular feeding. Tonight he would only suck for about 5 seconds at a time. Only got about 4 ounces in. He took maybe another two by licking it off the end of nipple. He acts hungry, but won't suck. I think there is something wrong with his mouth but I can't see anything or feel anything unusual. Maybe this will sound stupid, but could he be having problems teething? Tried giving him milk in a bowl but he doesn't get that. He will still eat leaves readily.

I'm very concerned because we are having very hot humid weather, and I'm worried about keeping him hydrated if he won't drink. Also because it is just so unlike him. His only other symptom is that he seems less energetic than normal. Otherwise he has good solid poop, and has been drinking 13 ounces of zoologic three times a day. He is in with one other fawn, two weeks younger, and has small amounts of greens, some grain mix, and water in the pen.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Nothing harder than seeing one of these little buggers struggle.

13 ounces of zoologic three times a day

in this heat I dont think I could drink anymore milk than that either. Just make sure water is available and plenty of feed and hay.

I'm at a month and a half old and only get 9 oz per feeding. 3-4 times a day cant always get the mid day one in due to work constraints.

Uncle Harley is right, also sounds like he may eating more pellets and greens which also cuts back on the milk, good luck!!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I had suspected it was just the heat/humidity until he still acted that way last night, although it never got under 75 degrees with 100% humidity. I am getting some in him today. I have been watering down the zoologic, and giving him half feedings every four hours. He used to suck so hard on the bottle, I also thought maybe he has a blister somewhere in his mouth, because he eats leaves fine but the nipple seems to bother him. I can't see anything, but can't get a great look, with him jumping around and trying to find food.

Could he be allergic to the nipples you are using? I have heard of this in the past. My doe liked the Gerber baby bottles/nipples best.

if you are using a human baby bottle they are deffantly sucking air and can cause a false bloat. that will temporarily make them feel full. ( not that you cant use these types of bottles as I do with great results) but if it's causing problems get a lambs nippe or prichards teet ( I believe that is what they are called) from a farm supply store and that will help with swallowing air.

i feed zoologic also, i also use their recommended schedule, which it sounds like you are too. if he ever gets to where he just doesnt seem interested just skip that feeding for him, he will probably be hungry on the next. we have this all the time. and as they said earlier it could just be that they are eating feed or just eating more grass and leaves. always keep a pan of water in there and you should be just fine.

i would also recommend not bottle feeding bucks, unless absolutely necessary. i almost had to do one this year, but it can be very dangerous. just a personal thought. nothing against you.

Have you checked his temp? We have had fawns do the same thing checked their temp found it high gave drax and banamine. Started eating next feeding. Have had some stop eating and start chewing the nipple. We gave them banamine and after a couple of feedings chewing stopped and they started sucking again. Hope this helps.

I know in hot humid weather, milk is the last thing I wanna drink unless it is watered down. I would try watering it down 50/50. 50% milk, and 50% water in the bottle. He may not know how to drink from a bowl yet.

We had a doe fawn that did the same thing this spring.... she started eating really well and then slowly started eating less and less from the bottle this probably went on for two weeks... she ate hay and feed unfortuantely she did end up dying. My husband went in the shed to put the tractor away at about 9:30 PM and about an hour later when we went out to bottle feed she was dead. I don't have any remedies but I would definately watch him. Like another post stated I woudl prehaps check his temp.

Just to update:

He's back to normal now. Not sure what did the trick but we did the following:

1) Watered down milk by 50% for two feedings, then gradually back to full strength

2) Fed half feedings every four hours for 2 days so he didn't have to suck as long

3) Held him down to 10 oz. 3x/day, instead of 13 oz.

4) Pinch of baking soda in bottle for 2 days

Also, temps have been down into low 70's.

Thanks for all the advice. Its hard not to over-react, because sometimes you don't get very much time to get them well.

with fawns i dont think theres really such a thing as over reacting. especially when your not sure as to whats going on. glad to hear hes doing better.
